JFM welcomes letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen by 21 members of Congress urging action on foreign assets
JUSTICE FOR MYANMAR
Dear all,
21 members of the US Congress have sent a letter to US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen urging action with allies to locate and freeze Myanmar's foreign assets and to strengthen laws and sanctions designations. You can view the letter here.
Here's a response from Yadanar Maung, Justice For Myanmar spokesperson:
"We welcome this move by members of Congress urging the US Treasury to take action with allies to locate and freeze Myanmar’s remaining foreign assets. These assets belong to the people of Myanmar, not the war criminals that carried out the attempted February military coup. Further efforts should be made to ensure that foreign assets do not prolong the illegitimate rule of the junta, which has murdered nearly 900 people, including children. We urge other governments to urgently act to ensure their banks are not enabling the Myanmar junta's crimes and to immediately impose targeted sanctions against the junta and it conglomerates."
See JFM’s feature published in February, calling on the international community to take immediate action to prevent the junta from gaining access to the country’s foreign assets and using the international banking system to maintain their campaign of terror: https://www.justiceformyanmar.org/stories/revealed-the-international-banks-providing-finance-to-the-myanmar-military
