Practical family gardening for healthy food: March 12th @ 6:30pm-8:30pm, 17th, and 24th from 10am-12 noon Cost: $30
In a backyard garden, quality is easily attainable. With frugal biological tweaks, most any piece of land can yield nutritious food for our families.
Our three classes will talk about timing and techniques for seeding inside and out, and for transplanting into the garden. Then comes maintenance of the growing plant - cultivation, regular and living mulches, watering, and pests. Finally comes the best part, the harvesting for fresh use, and possible storage!
The benefits of a home garden come from a long-term, low input method of management. Permanent raised beds, and season extension make it possible for a fertile, managed garden to bring us nutritious harvests most months of the year.
Course Leader: Leif Winter. Leif has been a market gardener at farmers markets for most years since the late seventies. He also had a CSA for eleven years, including two winter CSAs. Sold to restaurants. Worked at nurseries selling plants, and landscaping. This was in Susquehanna County, and outside of Binghamton, New York.
Essential Oils: Tuesdays (April 10th and 17th) 6:30pm-8:30pm Cost: $20
What are Essential Oils? How are they made? Join us to answer the beginning questions. Learn how to use Essential Oils with caution as well as the shelf life of Essential Oils, how to safely use Essential Oils topically and by inhaling, and a fun make and take at the end of the second class!
Course Leader: Christa Metz. Christa lives with her family in McAlisterville and loves visiting the library and participating in activities held at the library. She is certified in UEOS Basics for safely handling and using essential oils.
The Holocaust Through Literature and Film: Mondays (April 2nd to May 7) 6:30pm-8:30pm Cost: $50
This course will focus on the development of the Nazi killing machine known as the Holocaust. How did it all start and how and why did it end? How many ways were people murdered so that the Nazi regime could have their “Lebensraum”, their living space? Was there any resistance: From the victims? From the German citizens? From the Christian churches? Segments of the 1994 Steven Spielberg film Schindler’s List will be the starting point for each class. The remainder of that class period will move through the history of that segment with many other sources: books, movie excerpts, documentaries and film clips of victim testimonies. The class will be encouraged to use books and the internet to add depth to our study. Class participation will be welcomed. No prior knowledge of the Holocaust is necessary.
Recommended outside reading if interested: Night by Eli Wiesel, Survival in Auschwitz by Primo Levi, The Survivor: Anatomy of Life in a Death Camp by Terence Des Pres and The Librarian of Auschwitz by Antonio Iturba. All of these books can be found in the Juniata County Library.
Course Leader: Ann Beaver. The course leader is a retired educator with 29 years of experience as a high school German, Holocaust and English teacher. She has attended many workshops on the Holocaust, on hate, prejudice, bigotry, and racism. Ann was treasurer of the PA Holocaust Education Council and an active member for many years.
