AI and art discourse going mainstream
The topic of AI slop and generated content has clearly gone mainstream when it’s on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
I also found a new visual essay by Christoph Niemann on the topic of AI and art with a similar spirit. While initially I wanted to screenshot and quote a lot of things, it’s better to scroll through the whole page. This illustration is a good summary.

OK, maybe just these snippets.

I have certainly used A.I. as an assistant, but since the use case was clear, it had a descriptive name, like voice-to-text transcription, spellcheck or auto-translation. Niemann mentions he uses A.I. to “delete unwanted elements from photos, extend missing backgrounds and boost resolution.” I’m looking forward to having these tools sans hype–if they’re worth the environmental and energy costs, and, obviously, without the stolen labor and violence.

Is it good enough? For Christoph Niemann? Unlikely.
Comedy drawings
I haven’t been drawing as much as I’d have liked, but I got into live drawing comedy shows. It’s fun to come up with little visual notes without giving away the jokes.

I posted more on Instagram! Mostly because that’s where the comedians can see them.

Take care,
Julia
