#014 - I'm hosting IndieWeb Carnival again

Happy end of April! I’ve been bursting from energy this past week and I’m so excited with all the new stuff that’s coming.

I’ve taken a bit of a hiatus this spring from my community organising but this month I’ve started to organise events for summer and fall. Our Future Frontend conference is coming 8th-9th June (there are still tickets available!) and I’m looking forward to archipylago and Turku ❤️ Frontend events next fall.

IndieWeb Carnival: you are invited to write!

IndieWeb Carnival is a monthly blogging festival by people in the IndieWeb community but everyone is invited. If you have a blog that’s accessible in the open web, I invite you to participate.

May’s theme is Love letter. The world right now isn’t brimming to the top with positivity and happy news so I want you to write about something you’re into.

A love letter could be an expression of appreciation for someone who’s had a positive impact on your life or sharing a piece of art, media, software or something else you enjoy so more people can discover it.

To participate, write a post in your blog and share the link with me and I’ll add it to the announcement post’s running tally and at the end of the month, I’ll write a round-up post gathering together all the entries.

IndieWeb Carnival is a great opportunity to join a community of writers with varying themes and to find new blogs to follow.

Roll the Zine

I’ve always been interested in zines but never felt good enough with graphics and illustrations to make my own. In January I decided to challenge that idea and started writing my own. Roll the Zine is an 8-page zine about board games and card games.

I’ve published two so far and will publish new ones whenever I feel like it. If you enjoy board games, check it out!

Lovely bits from the internet

Tom Scott’s England

After an hiatus from video creation, Tom Scott is back and this time he’s touring all the counties in England and making documentary-style videos about interesting things happening there.

Bad Website Club Spring cohort

Want to learn how to make websites with nice people online? Bad Website Club is a lovely, free, self-paced course that starts from the very basics. Jess, Eda and Carmen who run the sessions are wonderful people and I appreciate them putting in the work to help others through this program.

XOXO Archives

XOXO was an experimental festival for independent artists and creators from the internet and this spring they released a full archive of amazing talks from the past 8 festivals.

Two recommendations to get you started: Simone Giertz, the Queen of Shitty Robots from 2016 and Molly White from 2024.

Train Jazz

Train Jazz is a fascinating piece of art and technology. Every train in New York is turned into an instrument and as they move around in the city, they play tunes as the website tracks their real-time movement.

Every dot is a real subway train. Eight hundred of them, give or take, form a small jazz combo (walking bass, piano, sax, vibes, brushes) that has been playing without pause for over a hundred years. On the platforms they are hot, screaming, full of complaint. This is the music inside the noise.
