#013 - Sun is back

After a long dark winter, it’s finally started to feel like spring is right around the corner. The increased sunshine during the days have had a massive positive impact on me and I’m so happy for that.

🏳️‍⚧️ Happy Trans Day of Visibility and a reminder that trans rights are human rights. ❤️

We live in a world where right-wing politicians all around are attempting to make the world worse to live for people and we shouldn’t let that happen. In Finland, a citizen’s iniative Olemme olemassa that is asking for a non-binary gender option with a self-identification process to be added to the law got the required 50 000 statements of support and will go to the parliament at some point to be discussed. So happy to see it cross the 50k mark in the end.

Stuff I made this month

I started the month by writing about my disappointment in the rebranding of Eleventy/11ty to Build Awesome Free. While I love the tool and I’m very thankful for all the hard work Zach’s put into it and happy for him to find a more financial sustainable way to keep building it, I felt the whole rebranding reeked corporate jargon and I decided to move my focus on elsewhere when choosing what to write about.

I did end up nerdsniped in Fediverse not too long after that blog post though and while taking a late night train home from a work training, I built a small demo and wrote a blog post about a way to split content in Eleventy templates.

I’ve also been recently playing quite a lot of video games to escape from reality. I did a challenge run in Stardew Valley, had a discussion about video game sequels, and have been playing games for Helmet’s Gaming Challenge and writing about them in my digital garden. I was especially excited about Slay the Spire 2’s release (spoiler alert)!

I’ve been doing a bit of new client work as well and that inspired me to improve my own tooling. So much of web development is building forms and then filling them over and over and over and over and over again. I’ve been previously using bookmarklets to automate that and now I built FormFiller — a tool that makes creating those easier.

Lovely bits from the internet

Illustration of a detective wearing brown jacket and hat looking at a board with a map, police report and couple of other pictures and postits, all connected with red string

SQL Murder Mystery is my type of educational content! It’s a great exercise for anyone who has recently started learning database query language SQL. It hides all the exercise behind a murder mystery that you need to solve by utilising your SQL skills.

A blue blob with a concerned facial expression standing on a thin platform next to another thin platform

100 Jumps is a fun lil’ game that you can play on browser or mobile devices where your goal is to complete 100 consecutive jumps from platform to another. It sounds easier than it is.

A small rodent on a tree branch with an acorn stick figure riding on its back

David M. Bird’s Becorns is one of the cutest things I’ve seen in a long time. David is a photographer who creates really cool photos with flowers and animals interacting with small things he builds.

Artist Odd Artworks has a Youtube channel where they illustrate role-playing posters, zines and campaigns while sharing the process. It’s been a delight to see how those amazing looking pieces form on a digital paper.
