Judoscale News: šŸŽŗ We Brought the Party to RailsConf25

Judoscale: One-Click Autoscaling for any hosting platform ✨

Happy Thursday, Judoscalers! We’ve got some fun news, musical recaps, and great articles to share with you this month. With August just around the corner (er.. tomorrow!), the summer heat is upon us! Anybody else (not) finding this summer to be particularly humid in the midwest? šŸ˜¬šŸ™‹šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

Moisture aside, here’s what’s on our radar in this month’s edition of The Judoscale News:

  • šŸ“ Rails On-Premise... At RailsConf!
  • āœ… Judoscale on ANY Platform
  • šŸ“ Proactive Autoscaling
  • šŸ“ How Judoscale's Utilization-Based Autoscaling Works
  • ā³ Throwback Thursday: Autoscaling on Heroku Fir

Let’s dive in!

šŸ“ Rails On-Premise... At RailsConf!

The whole Judoscale team (all three of us) got together in Philadelphia earlier this month and had a great time bringing some whimsy to RailsConf. And really, what conference couldn’t use a little more whimsy!? So we gave away free kazoos, had kazoo parties, built a custom Rails app to synchronize our kazoo videos across multiple screens, and enjoyed having a booth without any of the actual sales’y things that most sponsors do šŸ˜‰ just free giveaways, meme-like videos, and way too much green šŸ˜Ž. See our greatest hits here:

Also see Adam’s fun post about RailsConf here:

If I was responsible enough to do any sort of ROI calculation, this never would have happened. | Adam McCrea

If I was responsible enough to do any sort of ROI calculation, this never would have happened. Instead, we went all-in on RailsConf with 15 homemade videos and a custom local-only app to run our booth. I'd do it all over again.

āœ… Judoscale on ANY Platform

We know that not everyone fancies Heroku, Render, Fly, Railway, or Amazon ECS. We understand! And we still love you. So much so that we’ve opened up a custom integration ingress! With a fancy new button and all:

This means that you can run your favorite all-in-one queue-time-based autoscaler (that’s us šŸ‘‹) on any platform that we don’t (yet?) have a native integration for. It takes a couple of extra steps, but we promise it’s not difficult. As always, we’re also here to help. Check out our comprehensive docs on this new avenue here.

šŸ“ Proactive Autoscaling

We recently announced a new avenue and style of autoscaling with Judoscale: proactive autoscaling via utilization. Brand new to the world of scaling, and different than other ā€œutilizationā€s, this proactive style of scaling ultimately allows applications to define a certain level of headroom they want to maintain ahead-of-time, then scales the app dynamically to maintain that headroom! This is a massive win for apps whose traffic patterns are highly spiky but without a real schedule to the spikes! We announced and wrote all about that feature here:

šŸ“ How Judoscale's Utilization-Based Autoscaling Works

Following up our Proactive Autoscaling article, which was a higher-level discussion around where it fits into application strategies, we also penned an article explaining what our ā€œutilizationā€ metric really is. The goal here was to cover what ā€œutilizationā€ really is for a web server, how processes and threads play a role, and how to accurately estimate an applications real capacity for more requests! We think you’re going to like this technical dive. Give it a read here:

ā³ Throwback Thursday: Autoscaling on Heroku Fir

Heroku’s new platform, ā€œFirā€, has seen some large adoption since its release earlier this summer. Its Kubernetes-based architecture brings some important features for all apps (notably a likely solve for that pesky Noisy Neighbors issue...) but, while it remains in Private Spaces for now, Fir apps still need autoscaling! The great news is that Judoscale fully supports Fir and has since day one. So you really can get the best of all worlds: Fir’s modern containerized workflow, Heroku’s best new performance hardware, and Judoscale’s highly dynamic autoscaling. Check it out here:

That’ll do it for us this month! Our team is looking forward to fall and sharing some of the exciting new features we have in the R&D Labs with you soon šŸ˜‰. Stay cool out there!
