🤖 Judoscale News: So Long, 2024! 👋 (December 2024)

Greetings, Judoscalers! And welcome to our last newsletter of 2024 😱. Not only that, but the last work-day of the year for so many (yours truly included!). From our families to yours, we truly hope you have wonderful holidays and some merry joy 🎄. Onward to the Judo tech news! In today’s issue...

  • 📊 2024 Judo-Stats
  • 💅 Re-Rendering Render
  • 🦾 New Platform Integrations In Beta
  • ⚖️ Kamal vs. PaaS’s!
  • 🔐 Cloudflare with Heroku SSL... the right way!

Some 2024 Judo-Stats

As we approach the last days of 2024 we thought it’d be fun to review some stats on our end from this year! Here are some fun highlights:

  • We’ve executed over 17 million auto-scales this year! That is, we’ve found a service in need of a scale change and added or removed a dyno/service seventeen million times this year (so far).
  • Our back-end servers have received, processed, and served an estimated 64,000,000,000 requests this year. Over 64 billion requests! That’s roughly around/above 2,000 requests-per-second all year long.
  • Throughout the year we’ve managed autoscaling for close to 5,000 services (e.g. web or worker or background-csv-ingester etc.), constantly working to keep them within their metrics and schedules!
  • As we’ve continued to grow this year, over 1,000 teams now actively depend on and trust Judoscale to keep their applications and services performing smoothly and save them money!

We’re also proud to say that all of these statistics remain atop a personal, completely reachable, two-developer shop. While we did morph a little bit into a two-devs-and-a-writer (👋), we remain committed to staying small and answering emails ourselves. No corporate customer service here!

So, with that, a big thank you for your patronage and being our customers, colleagues, and friends. We love running Judoscale and hearing success stories of costs saved, performance gained, and alerts quashed. We’re looking forward to 2025!

A ‘thank you’ from the team here at Judoscale, for a great 2024

Re-Rendering Render!

While our platform integration for autoscaling Render applications has been running smoothly for a couple of years now, we decided to execute some pretty major architectural refactors. Centrally, Render themselves added some organizational features that we wanted to reflect. So now you can sync Projects and Environments from Render over to Judoscale! This allows for much more organic service grouping and organization. We think our Render customers will be super happy with this.

New Platform Integrations In Beta!

Speaking of platform integrations, we’re looking for teams/apps/folks that are interested in beta-testing our latest platforms! If you have, or will soon have, an application hosted on Railway or Fly.io and want queue-time based autoscaling, let us know! #JudoscaleEverywhere is well underway.

No PaaS?? 😱

Hot off the blog-press, we’ve got a spicy topic ahead! Kamal vs. PaaS. Kamal and the no-PaaS track have some really nice features and offerings, but at the same time no pragmatic person should immediately write off Platforms! They provide so much. We wanted to explore that contrast and walk out the real-world differences at play here. Needless to say, there’s a new kid in town!

Let’s Talk SSL

Speaking of PaaS’s, have you ever set up an application on a PaaS and gotten to the step about “Use HTTPS” or “Set up SSL certificates” and... just clicked “yes” through all the prompts to get done as fast as possible? (We have.) Have you ever then wanted to setup Cloudflare for that same application but had no idea what all the SSL settings in Cloudflare even mean? Same here. But good news — we explained it top-to-bottom! The right way to configure your Heroku application to run Cloudflare’s CDN in front of it while still having secure requests through-and-through. Check it out!

That’s all we’ve got for you this month! Catch everyone in 2025!

P.S. One of our biggest accomplishments in 2024 was making a commercial. As in, a proper, 30-second-slot, video, commercial!

Okay, not really. Or not seriously, at least. We did make a commercial (in our own kitchen with our own cameras and all) but it was a gag for Drew Bragg’s “Who Wants to be a Ruby Engineer?” game-show at RubyConf last month. The whole bit is a play on the word “Judoscale” and, even though we wanted to give the beautiful green kitchen scale away, nobody wanted it! 😢

Nonetheless, this will go down as some Billy Mays’ our finest work. Please, enjoy:
