šŸ¤– Judoscale News: 🟣 Heroku’s New Platform....

Judoscale: One-Click Autoscaling for any hosting platform.

Happy Friday, Judoscalers! Welcome to the May edition of Judoscale News — sneaking right in before the weekend and June slips into our calendars! Already about halfway through 2025... where does the time go!? šŸ•°ļø

Here’s what we’ve got lined up for you this month:

  • šŸ“ Autoscaling on Heroku Fir: Your Options Today in 2025
  • šŸ•ŗ RailsConf 2025 — Will You Be There?
  • 🌐 Autoscaling Any Platform: The Gates Are Open
  • šŸ“ Scaling Python Task Queues Effectively
  • ā³ Throwback Friday: Understanding Queue Time

Let’s dive in!

šŸ“ Heroku Fir Is Live!

....but just for Private Spaces 😭. We were hopeful that Fir would GA in the common runtime even though the beta rollout was just for Private Spaces. Alas, that’s not the case. Womp womp — we’re stuck with our noisy neighbors for now!

But this is great news if you are a Private Spaces customer. Fir brings several deep improvements to Heroku’s platform and workflow. And, best of all, Judoscale is the first autoscaling system for Heroku Fir. We’re fully-featured and ready to rock! There are other options, too. But you’re already on our newsletter, why wouldn’t you pick Judoscale?! Read all about it right here:

With Fir being GA’d, Heroku also updated its pricing docs to reflect the cost of each new dyno tier. Assuming these prices hold steady for Fir’s eventual Common Runtime release, there are some fascinating candidates here:

Compared to Cedar’s STD and Perf offerings, there are a couple of gems hidden in this chart! We’ll talk more about them in a coming article — stay tuned! šŸ‘€

šŸ•ŗ RailsConf 2025

Our team is getting excited for RailsConf just around the corner! The last one! The end of an era. The whole Judoscale team (that’s 2.5 people 😜) will be there, and we’ve got some fun surprises in store. First, we’ll have a booth! šŸŽ‰ Which means we need to prepare our ā€œsales guyā€ mentalities. We’re... really bad at that. So we’ll probably just be normal devs hanging out šŸ˜…. Second, we’ll be making music! I don’t want to reveal too much, but needless to say, you won’t miss us šŸ˜‰

🌐 Autoscaling Any Platform

We mentioned it in a ā€˜sneak peak’ last month, but we’re officially in early-access phase for a platform agnostic approach to autoscaling with Judoscale. As in, fully-featured, queue-time-driven, all-the-bells-and-whistles Judoscale... but for platforms we haven’t built out integrations for yet! We even made a fancy new button for it šŸ˜‰

We’re still in early-access and smoothing out a couple of sharp edges, but if you’re itching to get that one-click autoscaling goodness on a platform outside of the five we natively support, let us know! We’d love to walk you through the custom integration process and get your feedback along the way šŸ™ (just reply to this email!)

šŸ“ Scaling Python Task Queues Effectively

Have you ever faced the growing pains of background jobs piling up faster than your coffee pot can refill? Have your python processes turned into fields of snakes?! šŸšŸ˜± Jeff has answers for you! From choosing the right message broker to understanding vertical vs. horizontal scaling trade-offs, he lays out the essentials for keeping your Python queues nimble. He also dives into which metrics actually matter for scaling! This one’s a quality primer. Give it a read here:

ā³ Throwback Friday: Understanding Queue Time

We here at Judoscale are immersed and aware of queue time all the time. As your resident home of queue time experts, it’s sort of what we do. But we also realize that we’re... probably the only people in the world this focused on queue time! For folks that actually go outside once in a while, queue time may not be top of mind! So we wanted to cycle back in one of our evergreen guides and highly recommend it for a good read. You know, that Friday night relaxing-by-the-window, quality content.

Okay, jokes aside, if you haven’t thought about scaling or metrics or queue time in a few months, it’s worth taking five minutes to skim this article! We’ve got some great, intuitive graphics to ā€œoooohā€ and ā€œaaaaahā€ at, but more importantly it’s healthy to exercise the old scaling brain-muscles! Trust us, you’re going to want to know which levers to pull if something happens in production! Give it a read here:

That’ll do it for us this month! We hope everyone out there has a wonderful June ahead, stays dry, and enjoys the sunshine as it comes. Hoping to see you all soon! āœŒļø
