Inspired By #95

Type: Knockout No. 47 Bantamweight by Hoefler & Co

Hi! Welcome to issue #95 of Inspired By, a monthly(-ish) newsletter from your friendly neighbourhood designer Jan-Paul Koudstaal. 😘

Here are some of the things I came across the last few weeks that inspired me:

🌞 Daylight

A healthier, more human-friendly computer. Designed for deep focus and wellbeing.

So it’s basically a paper-like tablet with the speed of an iPad. I’m intrigued! And they have a beautiful website too. That subtle grainy shadow in the background resembling daylight coming in through a window 😮‍💨

Daylight | A More Caring Computer

Daylight Computer (DC1) is a new kind of calm computer, designed for deep work and health.

📚 Elisha Zepeda

This book cover designer, oh my goodness. He starts his reels with a task, like design a book with butterflies, and then shows a quick timelapse of how he designs several concepts. I love this!

🦹 DC Comics Style Guide

Standards Manual, famous for reprinting graphics manuals of NASA and NYC Transit Authority, is releasing the DC Comics Style Guide from 1982. I hope Marvel is next.

1982 DC Comics Style Guide (Pre-Order) – Standards Manual

The long-awaited reissue of the 1982 DC Comics Style Guide is now available for pre-order. Reproduced from a rare original copy, the book features over 165 highly-detailed scans of the legendary art by José Luis García-López, with an introduction by Paul Levitz, former president of DC Comics. Pre-order available, shipping August.

🎥 Kino

The team that brought you Halide Camera is back with a Cinematic Video App with built in LUTs. The webdesign and copy has Apple landing page vibes, I love it.

Kino — Pro Video Camera for iPhone

Great, cinematic video made easy. Great with Apple Log. Packed with presets and LUT support and real pro tools.

😱 MDS critiqued my website!

When you look at your own work for too long, you might not see how to improve it. That’s why I submitted my portfolio to be critiqued by Matt D. Smith, founder of interface design course Shift Nudge. ⚡️

Check out the video below to see what he had to say ↓

Here are some of the improvements I made, based on his feedback:
→ Revamped the intro section for a stronger first impression
→ Added UI-design to my portfolio grid (hover over the images)
→ Updated the navigation typeface for better readability

Feeling much more confident about my online presence now.

Thanks again Matt. 🙌🏻
