Inspired By #102

An almost unreadable font (Saint) and a chrome effect, why not

👋🏻 Hello!

This is Issue #102 of Inspired By, a monthly(-ish) newsletter from your friendly neighborhood designer Jan-Paul Koudstaal.

Here are some things that have inspired me over the past few weeks:

😍 Smith & Diction’s Stunning New Logo

Smith & Diction unveiled a beautiful new logo for their upcoming 10th anniversary, designed by Simon Letters.

The new Smith & Diction logo.

“I’ve always dreamed that the Smith & Diction name should be treated like the hand painted door signage of a private detective in the 1920’s or something and now that dream has come true. Couldn’t be happier with how this thing turned out.”

I just love that Mike convinced Simon that the design was finished by putting a chrome text effect on it 🤗

📕 11/22/63

Stephen King’s 11/22/63 (the date of the JFK assassination) is a blend of time travel, history (with a deep dive into Oswald and the JFK assassination), and even a touch of romance. A real page-turner!

I did find it weird that the main character (who is from 2011) didn’t mention the Back To The Future films, where they also went to the 50s and Biff got rich with sports betting.

The book was adapted into a 2016 mini-series produced by JJ Abrams starring James Franco. I’m currently watching it, and it’s interesting to see how they’ve changed the story.

👨🏻‍💻 Workflow.Design

Workflow looks promising, especially its AI review feature. I’m curious to see if it can truly replace other design and PM tools.

🆎 Exploring Font Management Tools

Fonts Pennant from Lost Type

I’ve been on the hunt for a font management tool that goes beyond basic organization and activation. Here are some I’ve found:

  • Fontbase

  • RightFont

  • Typeface

  • Extensis Connect

  • Fontstand

  • and Eagle (which does more than just fonts)

I’ve tried a few, but I’m still considering building something custom in Figma, because I’m very fond of its zoomable canvas.

That’s it, you made it!
