Intermediate Ruby - shaking off some dust
intermediate-ruby episode 1
Hi there!
It's me, Josh, from intermediateruby.com! It's been a while since I've sent you an email. If you don't want these emails anymore, hit this unsubscribe button: Unsubscribe
I've been digging back into a project.
I have a specific goal:
Help early-career software developers in the Ruby community become more effective and more confident.
"More effective" is a bit squishy and nebulous, and that's the stuff that we're going to be working on.
"More confident" is a bit more clear-cut. Think of some times you've felt confident, for good reason. Think of a time you've felt lacking in confidence. I want to help you get more of the former, and less of the latter.
I plan to accomplish this by implementing Benjamin Bloom's recommendations in the "The 2 Sigma Problem: The Search for Methods of Group Instruction as Effective as One-to-One Tutoring". Here's a good overview of the two-sigma problem (nintil.com).
I'm looking to get the benefits of high-quality 1:1 "pairing", but make it available to "large groups".
Basically, if you could sit down with an experienced developer, and they would craft well-suited tasks and exercises that would support your learning, in just the right way, with a high degree of responsiveness, your knowledge and effectiveness would grow at an impressive rate.
My question for you:
Do you consider yourself an early career developer or a later-career developer?
If you're an early-career developer, how do you hope your skills will grow in the next six months?
If you're an experienced developer (or in engineering leadership), what portions/projects of your career do you think led to the most growth? Why? Hit "Reply", let me know!
-Josh
PS: I'm working on a project based on Chelsea Troy's concept of Commit Tracing, as applied in Ruby via the Pry gem. I'm looking for three or four people willing to spend an hour pairing with me through this project. You're guaranteed to learn a lot in that hour, and it will help me better serve people who come behind you. If you're willing, hit reply and let me know! I'll share more details there!
