Joseph Zitt's [as if in dreams] 2024-10-11
Hi. I'm Joseph Zitt. I moved from the US to Israel in 2017. This is my newsletter about more-or-less daily life in my city in the shadow of war. You can select these links to subscribe or unsubscribe. There are more links at the bottom. You can also read this email online here. Here we go...
A quick note: shrapnel from an intercepted UAV hit a retirement home in my town. It wasn't my House. And everyone there had gone into their protected areas. No one was hurt.
I had been about a kilometer from there about an hour before. Since it's Yom Kippur, a lot of people are out walking. Many places like this make their shelters available to the community. The city had asked people with houses on much-walked streets to make their shelters available and to post signs on the street pointing to them.
About an hour later, the city gave an all-clear. Workers are dealing with the damage. Some of the city lost power.
We had alarms here in the House. I stepped out into the hallway, as did other residents in my hall.
We found out, by the way, why the overhead announcement had told us to go down to the ground-floor shelter last time. A couple of people from the neighborhood had come running in when the alarms sounded. The person at the front desk had told them, "Go down to the shelter." Unfortunately, he hadn't switched off the mic to the public address system yet, so we all heard it.
We've been assured that the hallways are secure. In case of alarms, we just need to step out the door. Ten minutes later, once the chance of shrapnel has ended, we go back inside. Life goes on.
