Joseph Zitt's [as if in dreams] 2024-04-16
Hi. I'm Joseph Zitt. I moved from the US to Israel in 2017. This is my newsletter about more-or-less daily life in my city in the shadow of war. You can select these links to subscribe or unsubscribe. There are more links at the bottom. You can also read this email online here. Here we go...
In the morning, I yell at my network.
At work, I sit and stare at my computer.
In the afternoon, we have a celebration, a haramat kosit (raising of the glasses) since Passover is coming. We have lots of food, and excellent chocolate and wild berry liqueurs
As I head home, I realize that, after a couple of drinks, I'm glad that I'm not driving. I also decide to go the long way around, rather than take the shortcut with the perilous steps.
In the evening, I yell at my network. With the help of the person who makes the very specific tutorial videos, I figure out that the software that I thought was causing the problem isn't. It also appears that the router that I had removed was serving a purpose, though not one that would have been relevant when I installed it.
It looks like my ISP is blocking the server software that I need. All traffic depending on the router for DNS (the service that turns human-readable web addresses into numeric locations) must go through their filters. The DNS server addresses are hard-coded into the router and can't be changed. My guess is that since the secondary router, on which I had indicated a different DNS server, was able to send the traffic around the ISP's router, I hope to put it back in on Wednesday evening.
Normally, before doing this, it would be good to speak to the ISP's customer service. Been there, done that. Their help line is like The Vogon Poets' Department, less competent than Iranian attack planning and less user-friendly than Hamas (although, ironically, it looks like I have to tunnel around them).
This is apart from the issues of the physical cable between my apartment and the street. Apparently no one is responsible for that, so It's just rotting underground.
There may have been news. I have accumulated it and will look at it later.
