Joseph Zitt's [as if in dreams] 2024-03-05
Hi. I'm Joseph Zitt. I moved from the US to Israel in 2017. This is my newsletter about more-or-less daily life in my city in the shadow of war. You can select these links to subscribe or unsubscribe. There are more links at the bottom. You can also read this email online here. Here we go...
Partway through the day, I try to log in to Facebook for the first time on my new phone. I can't. I figure that I've set something up wrong.
I turn to my work PC and go to the Facebook tab. I've been logged out. I guess that setting up the phone messed things up for my account in general.
A friend nearby sends me a WhatsApp message. She can't log in to Facebook. Neither can her friends. That isn't good. It's not just me.
I had read earlier that several more cable lines in the Red Sea had been cut.1 I worry that the Houthis may have cut something affecting us.
My friend on WhatsApp tells me that she's gotten word that people can't get on in Canada, either. I relax a bit. At least it isn't the Houthis.
I hop onto X/Twitter. Yup, it's all over the world. People there are having fun, posting memes representing panicking hordes running to them when the competitor is down.
After work, I stop at my usual café for a sachlav. I try to get onto Pocket, which is run by Mozilla, who make Firefox. I can't get on there, either. My Mozilla account in general is messed up. I'm not happy.
When I get home, I gradually sort things out. The process involves problems with Bitwarden, connected to issues with my authenticator, leading to hassles connecting to Firefox.
Each of the problems is different. They're unrelated. They're all just happening at once.
I finally get them straightened out. I eat a quick supper of rice and cheese, write the first draft of this post, and sit in my big chair to watch a brief movie. The TV works. So does the chair.
At least it wasn't the Houthis.
