Joseph Zitt's [as if in dreams] 2024-02-12
Hi. I'm Joseph Zitt. I moved from the US to Israel in 2017. This is my newsletter about more-or-less daily life in my city in the shadow of war. You can select these links to subscribe or unsubscribe. There are more links at the bottom. You can also read this email online here. Here we go...
Ten cement trucks wait in a line on the street where I work. An eleventh pulls up as I walk past them. It's as if elephants are gathering to audition for the circus.
The big tubs that spin keep spinning. I suppose they have to spin until they're emptied. (I don't know much about cement trucks.)
The first sits at the entrance to one of several construction sites along the street. A panel in the fence around the site is open. Red dirt surrounds a deep pit inside.
I think this had been an apartment building. If I recall old signs correctly, it will be one again. Following the pattern in this neighborhood, what's going up will probably much fancier than what came down.
I have an unremarkable day at work. Coming home, I stop for supper at the chicken joint downtown.
As I eat, I see a dog wander around off-leash. He comes up to the doorway of the shop. To my surprise, he doesn't wander inside, but just sits patiently. After a while, the owner throws some meat out the door. It lands surprisingly far away. The dog eats it and wanders on.
