Migrating to bluer skies

I joined the mass exodus a few weeks ago—rekindling spirits of blogging

I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with this newsletter.

I’ve enjoyed the purpose of writing, but…it’s still not the right medium for how I want to develop my writing practice.

What I want to write about is whatever that comes to be, to build a personal database full of writings that I’ve done over the years, to tend to my own digital garden.

On Migration

Bluesky is an social internet company, building on top of open protocols, so that social communication can be open and interoperable. Just like the internet itself. Excitingly, it’s a Public Benefit Corporation—a for-profit copmany looking to make a positive impact on society with some legal guardrails.

Importantly: it’s not owned by a billionaire.

It’s not just me—hah!

As of…right now, it’s adding 11.21 users per second.

The week after the Presidential Election Day in the United States, more than one-million new members joined—reaching 15-million users. With the current growth rate close to 1-million new users per day.

It’s incredible to watch in real time, as well as the communities that are migrating and feeling it out.

Aligning with the Indieweb

It’s exciting becuase of how it’s creating a vast network of people that are getting to understand and re-feel how an indepdent internet can be. From the culture of blocking to the excitement—phew.

One of my favorite bits has been discovering people’s blogs again. And that’s the purpose of this post.

I missed out on the Blogging Days of old, and it feels like this is making a comeback because of these changes. From the ATprotocol, to RSS, JSON, and the like—time to get my own blog into the mix.

So, I’ll figure out what to do with this newsletter.

It’ll be reincarnated, again, once I’m through with getting my blog up (and it’s getting there!).

If you’re around on BlueSky, come say hi!

I’m at jonathanstephens.bsky.social.

(Been having DNS issues and can’t get my @jonathanstephens.us handle yet. Evidently having similar issues with Webmentions and ActivityPub…will figure it out one day)
