The Putney VCS 3? Call of Cthulhu? What do _you_ use JD for?

Hey there Decimals. It's been a while, sorry I'm not more chatty. I'm just not naturally the sort of person who strives to send more email. :-)

A message from a Decimal the other week got me and Lucy talking over a beer, and I had an epiphany.

I've always assumed that this thing would be most useful at work. Frankly I just assumed that's where I'd make money from it. So I've written it with a project manager in mind. And, sure, it's useful at work. But I don't think that's where most of you are using it.

I think most of you are at home, doing whatever makes you happy. Our emailer is a sound artist, so she's organising her sounds. Someone on the Discord recently was sorting their 'Call of Cthulhu' roleplaying PDFs. Another guy has a collection of bikes: does each bike get its own ID, he asked?

All of this sounds much more interesting than a project schedule.

So I think I'm going to change the focus of the site. Change the examples, change the tone. Because what I realised is that whatever you do at home now, it involves a computer. Our sound artist friend is plugging physical cables in to these beautiful synthesisers from the 1960s!, but at the end of the day she ends up with a sound file and now that has to be organised.

You just can't avoid computers. Data is everywhere, and we're all drowning in it. And 'normal people' -- all of you who aren't IT professionals and full-time data nerds -- just want help. You've got all this stuff and you just want a nice way to organise it so that you can find it again.

At least, that's my thesis. But I don't know: so, tell me. I want your stories. What do you use Johnny.Decimal for?

This isn't a survey so I won't 'lead the witness' with a bunch of questions. I'd just like to hear your thoughts. Because they make me think, and I talk to Lucy about it when we go for walks, and that's how we have good ideas and it's how this thing will evolve to be more useful to more people.

Thanks! I hope you're all well. Spring has come early to Canberra, it's been hot. We might get a thunderstorm later today, fingers crossed.

j.

P.S. we're thinking of jazzing up the JD logo (which I made in about 2 hours and I am no designer) with some funky colours, and then we'll get some stickers made. Expressions of interest in a sticker welcome -- if enough people are keen I'll send out an email later asking for a shipping address so don't send that.

P.P.S. people seem to love the Workbook, so if you haven't seen it, check it out! It pays our rent (seriously) for which we are unbelievably grateful. The Second Edition will drop on Friday.
