June 2024 update [D01.21.02.009]
Hi everyone. I hope you’re well and, statistically, I hope you’re warm. Down here in Canberra the cold has set in.
But it’s shaping up to be a proper Canberra winter: crystal clear blue skies most days. A nice contrast to the last few years, which have been dreary and grey.
It’s one of those cities where you’ll check the temperature and head out swaddled in wool, then fifteen minutes later you’re sweating, peeling off the layers, because the sun, while weak, is beating down. This is nothing to complain about, and indeed I am not.
May was a big month of writing thanks to the #WeblogPoMo2024 challenge. I counted 16,337 words. I really enjoyed the challenge and will try to keep it up.
Here’s a couple of my favourites:
- Quitaversary https://jdcm.al/22.00.0036
- I cycled to the airport https://jdcm.al/22.00.0045
- Granularity of IDs https://jdcm.al/22.00.0050

First new thing: Ellane learns the command line.
My friend-on-Mastodon Ellane is frustrated that she can’t use the command line. She wants to learn how to do accounting using simple, plain-text tools, but the installation instructions for those tools go like this:
Simply open the terminal and type
curl -o git clone https://github.com/beancount/beancount.sh | bash
...at which point she rightly backs away. I’ve had the idea to record a ‘Learn with Lucy’ video course for a while, but we just don’t have time right now. Video courses take a long time to make well.
So we’ve started a mini-course-blog-conversation in the mean time. Follow along with us.
https://commandline.johnnydecimal.comSecond new thing: Learn with Lucy – Excel.
Actually not new, we recorded this in 2022. But we just moved it over to the platform that I use for the Johnny.Decimal Workshop to save us some cash.
This was our first course and in looking at it again this week I’m reminded just how good it is. Honestly, I think it’s really good. We’re really proud of it.
The premise is similar to the Ellane thing: Lucy couldn’t use Excel. I caught her literally adding up numbers on a calculator then typing them in. In her words, she was using it as ‘a grid of numbers’.
So I taught her, from scratch. I meticulously planned these lessons. Every concept builds on what you already know. There is zero assumed knowledge. We cover basically every Excel feature that you might reasonably care about, at a really gentle pace.
It’s 14 hours of video. 14! Across, I don’t know, 50-ish lessons. Plus Lucy drew a bunch of summary sheets, which are amazing, and there’s quizzes and all the stuff you’d expect from a course. It took us six months to produce.
Anyway, if you like what we do and you want to know more about Excel, you should have a look. It’s currently an absurdly low $69, and if you use coupon LWL-JDMAILINGLIST59 you can knock another tenner off to make it $59.

Learn with Lucy Excel
The beginner Excel course you've been looking for. Comprehensive curriculum, real-world data, focused on problem-solving, inspired by chickens. We'll give you the fundamentals you need and none of the stuff you don’t.
That page has a bunch of sample videos and a link to the ‘course map’ which is worth checking out. You will not find a better Excel course for $59. Lucy’s the proof that it works!
That coupon expires on ==Sunday 9th June== so jump on it.
Oh and you can give it as a gift now! Just tick the wee box there on the checkout page. (You can do the same with the Johnny.Decimal Workshop.)

Thanks for listening. Sorry to be selling you a thing but if I don’t, then we don’t ever get to go on holiday and I’d like a holiday. We really appreciate every sale; it’s just the two of us here trying to make a good thing. :-)
love from Canberra, j & l.
