I quit my job [21.02.001]

Hi there. It's been a while. A few things have happened.

I quit my job to work on Johnny.Decimal

I didn't love the job, and a late-Sunday-night conversation with my partner Lucy turned in to me resigning the next morning. Hardly spur of the moment -- this has been coming for some time -- but not what either of us had 'planned'.

The turn of events saw me free by Tuesday afternoon. Laptops and badges handed in. Quite surreal.

And so here I am: Johnny.Decimal. My job. (I need to think of something to write in the 'occupation' box; suggestions welcome.)

Therefore...

I could really use your support [02.01].

Long-term I want my income to come from corporate customers. I see so much chaos and wasted time at work (one of the few advantages of having a job -- it's great research) and I know I can help. There's so much time wasted, real time(=money) that I can help businesses save, and this will be my focus.

Short-term, we have savings. But our current income is now $0. If you could help me by becoming a patron, that would be amazing.

If not, no stress. This idea, this website, will always be here, will always be free. It'll just be a lot better if I can make it my occupation.

Follow the LinkedIn page

That said, I'll be focusing my social media efforts on LinkedIn. If there's anywhere screaming for fresh content it's LinkedIn, oh boy.

Following the Johnny.Decimal page would help. I promise you won't see any inspirational posts about leadership. /bangs head against wall

Employ me

I'm open for consulting gigs and will give very favourable rates to my first customers. If your company's data is all over the place, I can help.

(I was recently Head of Data and Interfaces for a very large government contract. I'm good at this.)

If you don't feel that I saved you more than I cost, I won't bill you. Contact details [21.01] are on the site.

New website

This is what started the whole shenanigans.

In January I realised that Johnny.Decimal was kinda popular. Which I still think is wild.

I've got a bunch of stuff I want to say. A bunch of notes and thoughts that I've collected over the last few years at work. Lots of problems to solve, and I think I have solutions. But the old website wasn't built to expand and, frankly, I'd forgotten how to.

So I started again. Hundreds of hours later I love the result [11.01] but, more importantly, it allows me to write more. And I will. Hence quitting. Turns out it's not possible to a) have a demanding full-time job, b) create new content for your website and forum [23.01], and c) have time to be lazy and read books and sit in the garden with Lucy and the chickens.

One of those had to go. Life's too short to put a crap job above a passion project and the chickens.

There's a blog

Just launched moments ago, the new blog [22.01].

Posts will be in the RSS feed [21.03] if you prefer. The full-content rendering of them isn't great though, something I'll fix one day.

There are two email lists

The vast majority of you signed up before there were two separate mailing lists [21.02]:

  1. 'Leave me the hell alone': very low traffic. Perhaps one/year. (You're reading it.) You're on this list.
  2. 'I'm bored at work': higher traffic. Perhaps one/month. You need to opt-in.

If you want to move to the 'I'm bored at work' list, you need to:

  1. Reply to this email.
  2. Tell me that you want to move to the 'I'm bored at work' list.
  3. If you're not replying from the email address on the list -- lots of you use newsletter-forwarding services, which is cool -- please explicitly state the address you subscribed with. Otherwise what am I gonna do eh? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(If you want off the lists, the unsubscribe link is in the footer.)

Media file

I was asked to be on The Omni Show, a podcast by the Omni Group. They make solid Mac software that I'm sure many of you know.

It was a lot of fun. Half an hour, have a listen.

That's it. It's Monday morning, cold but bright here in Canberra. One of the chickens -- Belinda 'the Bruiser' -- is moulting. Poor thing looks like a wet bag of feathers. I'm sitting listening to 'lo-fi air traffic control', great music to work to.
