"You actually are Pamela Anderson."
Sarah Cwynar’s exhibition at 52 Walker will close after the weekend and I do think you should see it if you haven’t. I wrote about Baby Blue Benzo alongside Steve McQueen’s Sunshine State at Dia Chelsea in October (which will be on view for a while). Here is an unpaywalled link if you have not yet or if you simply will not ever subscribe to TCT (I understand). Both of these shows would have been on my Top 10 for 2024, but I tried not to be too redundant with my coverage.
That said, I did list two things that I wrote about at the beginning of the year for 4Columns: Stéphane Mandelbaum at the Drawing Center and Raven Chacon at Swiss Institute. I think that Joan Jonas would have been on my list as well, but, you know, she was on a lot of people’s lists (I imagine), and I wanted to draw attention to some of the “under-the-radar” stuff I loved. For example, a show of special significance to Artforum exiles: Juliana Halpert’s suite of photographs, shot clandestinely in Knight Landesman’s office in 2017, brilliantly accompanied by her text of crowd-sourced advice. Or Morgan Bassichis’s performance Can I Be Frank?, a work of art that kind of served as my own personal Angelus Novus this year if you know what I mean. (Also on my TCT Top 10: Faye Driscoll, Thomas Hirschhorn, Ina Archer, Kara Walker, and Ralph Lemon.)
I saw Lemon’s show at MoMA PS1 just last week, during the day. That’s where I was when I learned of Lorraine O’Grady’s death. I returned to the big room where Rant redux is installed and sat on a bean bag for a long time.
