New for TCT: Jarrett Earnest on Harmony Hammond

An installation view of Harmony Hammond's exhibition at SITE SANTA FE. this is a frontal view of a dipytch-like painting composed of highly textured, "bandaged" canvases, one mustard and one rust-red.

I’m so happy to share Jarrett Earnest’s essay on the great Harmony Hammond this morning, focusing on the artist’s major exhibition, “FRINGE,” at SITE SANTA FE, on view now.

Jarrett and I recently spoke about art criticism and other things for his radio show Angelic Transmissions with Leigha Mason, now available in podcast form here. (I also highly recommend the Charles Atlas and Cynthia Daignault episodes. Angelic Transmissions is the best art podcast—no vapid chitchat.) Also: Jarrett just wrote a beautiful essay on the painter Sam McKinniss for Sam’s monograph, out next week. I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

A black-and-white photo of the artist Jack Whitten in his studio. A large canvas is laid in front of him on the floor and he appears to be dipping a long pole into a paint bucket or perhaps in a paint tray behind the pail.

I went to MoMA on Monday to see Jack Whitten’s show, which you should not miss. It’s the kind of show that I visit more than once. (And, come to think of it, it’s interesting to think about this work with Hammond’s paintings…) On my way out of the museum, I walked quickly through the design show on 3 and stumbled upon the Frankfurt Kitchen, 1926, a nice surprise, and a reminder that, like Grete Schütte-Lihotzky, you should fight Nazis.(I can’t imagine she’d be pleased to be shown in the Philip Johnson Galleries and really who would be? Time to change that name.) I wrote about her kitchen when it was shown on the 5th Floor (for Artforum, here’s a PDF.) The CAMP show is also amazing.

See you in the streets Saturday! NYC: Bryant Park 1PM.
