Track-By-Track: O/B #05
I first heard this tune by Trinidadian husband and wife duo Carl & Carl Jacobs played by Mário Valente, I think in Musicbox, and then another time in the Lux disco, an aural treat if ever there was one. It's a stomper, mixing soca with super chunky machine-funk drums and that huge, pulsing bassline. It kinda lopes along and then the chants of 'the streets!/the streets!/the streets are on FIYAH!' provide an unforgettable hook. All those elements mean that for me this occupies similar territory to Fonda Rae's (also stomping) 'Heobah' from 5 years earlier.
On this reissue from Emotional Rescue you have the original vocal and instrumental plus a light-touch extended version by Jonny 5, whose excellent DJ mixes I remember from infinitestatemachine and the disception message board, a long long time ago. And whaddya know, ISM is still up and running! Time to catch up on a few years' worth of posts...

Note: this is an entry in the Track-By-Track series for my mix for O/B.
Track-By-Track is a series that looks back at records you will have heard in my mixes, one by one in the order they were played. Who made them, and when? How did I come across them? And what do they make me feel?
