Midweek Mixes (30/11/22)
A run-down of some of the mixes and radio shows that have been soundtracking my existence – from the box-fresh to the tried-and-tested – all guaranteed to brighten up your week.
The mix I recently did for Amsterdam crew …Is Burning is an approximation of what I played at the Por Detroit party in LA at the start of October. When I wrote that night up in full, I mentioned the way the party turned out slightly differently to how I’d imagined in advance: more intimate and therefore with greater latitude - or so it felt to me - to stray off the functional path. That’s not to say I didn’t try and bang it out, just I did so with more strangeness and left turns than I might have risked had it been a much bigger crowd.
The selection in this mix reflects that vibe, being very much dancefloor but still weird and shapeshifty enough to keep the head engaged as much as the feet. It’s about 70% new music from current favs like Xiaolin, Man Power, Vermelho Wonder and Ali Berger, with some older rhythm tracks to act as the glue. There’s acid, pop, garage, italo, electro and good old fashioned techno all put together in what I hope is a truly HOUSE fashion - which is basically where my DJing has arrived at over the years. I think my DJing is perhaps now a little sleeker and up-to-date than in previous years, but still with enough character to be identifiably mine. I hope you enjoy it!

Freq with Bouffant Bouffant @ The Lot Radio (22/11/22)
I had the great pleasure of seeing Bouffant Bouffant warm up and close down his Gimme A Reason party in NOLA in September, bumping the opening hours with sunny house jams and the helping us come down to earth with sleaze and gospel. Here he gives us a more heads-down arms-up vibe, the slow and psychedelic chug of the first hour giving way to a euphoric mid-section and a rapidly accelerating finale of Detroit techno (what’s that incredible tune at 1h35?), electro (Kosh’s moody ‘Damn Frogs’) and a modern pop garage classic (Plus Management’s edit of ‘Let Me Love You Down’).
Sofie K is back on Midweek Mixes again, this time with a seaside jukebox of a podcast that seems to start in summertime and end turned towards the darker months of winter. ‘Everybody’s Got To Learn Sometime’ by The Korgis opens proceedings, followed by reggae, jazz instrumentals, new wave and dub. Judie Tzuke’s ‘Shoot From The Heart’ was new to me and it’s a balearic triumph of a centrepiece. At the end there’s an unexpected but delightful one-two from what sounds like Broken Social Scene, or whoever Broken Social Scene got their schtick from (or vice versa). It’s a politely rowdy end to a heartwarming mix.
