Midweek Mixes (19/05/21)
A run-down of some of the mixes and radio shows that have been soundtracking my existence – from the box-fresh to the tried-and-tested – all guaranteed to brighten up your week.
NB my radio show Flamingo will be broadcast today at 16h GMT on Rádio Quântica.
Malika - Astrofever Guest Mix
Malika guests on the new Worldwide FM show from fellow Casablancan Polyswitch, whose track on the Casa Sports Vol. 2 compilation was always a low-key, off-beat favourite of mine. His own Astrofever Records label is an outlet for his own jazzy broken beat and house and now this radio program shows where these sounds come from: Sun Ra, 3 Chairs, DJ Spinna remixing Donald Byrd – the connections draw themselves.
For the second half of the show, Malika draws on her love for hip hop, downtempo and chillout. Tracks like Fila Brazillia’s ‘The Sheriff’ are classic Malika, while a slowed down ‘Cuz It’s The Way’ from Max D’s fabulous album Many Any (which I’ve also previously featured on Flamingo) slots in coolly with DJ Nature and, uh, obscure Austrian broken beat.
This is the sound of someone who knows that the search for music should always be in service of the listening experience, rather than an end in itself.
aNNA - NARR Radio (08/05/21)
I listen to Dust Off co-chief aNNA’s radio show on NARR every month if I can and it’s always a wild ride. The first half of May’s show is a druggy glitchy soupy affair, tracks like Duckett’s ‘I Could Get Myself Into Hot Water’ (from his dump of Unreleased Tracks 2017-2020) accurately capturing the weird mélange of emotions I’ve been feeling these past weeks, as crises and stasis intermingle in my day-to-day and in the world outside.
The second half hits the floor with classic Bushwacka, Fantastic Man, Unique 3 and the like – the quintessential Dust Off experience, in other words – before a final soft landing.
Also on NARR are shows from people like Turnend Tapes, Ethan McNamara and PLU aka Jaye Ward and Ranks. Follow them here to keep updated.
