Midweek Mixes (15/06/22)
A run-down of some of the mixes and radio shows that have been soundtracking my existence – from the box-fresh to the tried-and-tested – all guaranteed to brighten up your week.
Note: my radio show Flamingo airs today at 16h GMT on Radio Quantica. This month it’s a two-hour recording of my set at El Cuerpo Del Disco in Madrid a couple of months ago. Happy Pride!
Jeanie Crystal @ Rinse FM (04/12/20)
Sam Ashton of Pumping Velvet put me on to this show as he’s booked Jeanie to play his next party, which will take place at Dalston Superstore in a month’s time. I listened to it sitting on a train from Brussels to Berlin and as it played out the track selection fired off all sorts of synaptic connections in my head between different friends and scenes.
There’s Asha Puthli’s ‘Space Talk’ (an edit of which appears early on in Chris Cruse’s Moongazing Mix, which I wrote about here), Native’s ‘Shifty’ (from Nick Kagame’s KMA mix, which I promise I will cover one day), the Steve Silk Hurley mix of New Order’s ‘Fine Time’ (played by Walrus & Adi just this past weekend at my friend Dana’s birthday party) and Amanda Lear’s ‘Alphabet’ (a perennial fav that inspired my own Alphabet Tribute Mix many years ago).
I guess I’m saying I identify strongly with the selection in this show, and wish I could be there to hear Jeanie do her thing in the DS bar. If you’re in London, get yourselves to Pumping Velvet on 15 July!
Eli Verveine - Carpet Mix Series 009
A two-hour recording of Eli Verveine playing at a recent warehouse party in Gothenburg. I did a Q&A with Tali to accompany the mix in which we talk about the role of confidence, patience and spontaneity in being a DJ. The mix is classic Eli Verveine: toughness and lightness combined into a driving and wide-ranging package. I’m still not a fan of that Dr Bootygrabber track (as I wrote about here) but it’s one misstep among many, many hits. There’s a full tracklist on the interview page.
Luigi Di Venere - Mihn Club Mix 019
Listening to this mix driving around the countryside in the South of France was a good shout for my holidays last week. What starts with sunny funk, Carly Simon and Stella’s amazing new EP soon progresses into psychedelic chuggers (including Luigi’s own Solidair project) and massive italo smangers to finish. I imagine this is a good representation of Luigi’s Maximum Joy party in Berlin, which I will hopefully get a taste of one of these days.
