The guest for the final episode of my Kiosk Outsiders residency this year was cay horiuchi, co-founder of UwU Collective and the Eros events series in Portland. We met at Honcho Campout 2023 (read a review of that set here) and then bumped into each other again earlier this year at Club Toilet in Detroit, around 8am, as Mike Servito was closing out the party with The Other People Place. We had a good dance.
The mix cay recorded for the show fully lived up to my very high expectations. This “day in the life of cay” mix begins with Björk & Antony and ends with Björk & David Morales, and in between they take us through classic Sade, a gnarly Sheila E track I’d not heard before, and a string of Japanese tunes from trip hop to synth pop to a cover of The Three Degrees, remixed by Bobby Konders.
As with their Campout set, the range in terms of geographies and eras is breathtaking, and in this home listening setting the selection also extends to some proper 70s jams like the Quincy Jones-produced ‘Strawberry Letter 23’ by The Brothers Johnson. You should luxuriate in the pacing and mixing, too, ideally while having a hot bath. Thank you cay for your music and friendship!

When me and cay were discussing the show, we talked a bit about how both of us used to do radio in our student days. Well that was enough of a cue for me to return to my unofficial series of nostalgic radio shows looking back at school/uni, which I started during covid (see previous shows here and here). In a nod to cay’s Björk bookends I opened and closed my hour with Mogwai, and kept things very Pitchfork-friendly in general, as that’s what my teenage years were like.
