In The Pocket: The Sound Of Welt Discos
This week I am launching the project I’ve been trailing here and there for the past month or so! In The Pocket: The Sound Of Welt Discos is a 21-track compilation and mix CD curated by me between December 2024 and June 2025.
The compilation features music by friends, heroes, and a couple of people I’ve never met. The CD contains those same tracks mixed together in a way that represents the arc of one of my DJ sets. Not many people realise the name for my label comes from clothing construction (welt pockets) not from the German word for ‘world’. But I guess the name of this project sort of speaks to both those ideas, as well as the US meaning of “playing in the pocket”.
The overall aim of the project has been to capture what it’s like to run a record label: the human connections and synchrony behind it, the musical world-building, and the way the records I’ve released translate into my DJing. The mix CD element has also been so important to me, as it’s the first time I’ve contributed something concrete (beyond curation) to my own label.
As I’m sure you can imagine, I will have plenty more to say about it. I want to spotlight the individual artists, who all have their own stories and paths that intersected with mine, and I also want to talk about the nuts and bolts of putting a project like this together completely independently.

To celebrate the CD release on Friday 26 September, I am made up to host two artists from the project who I admire very much — Xiaolin (DJ) and Viewtiful Joe (live) — to play at Outra Cena in Lisbon. If you’re in the city, please come and join us! RA event here.
