Flamingo #37 (26/01/22)
Flamingo is my monthly radio show on Lisbon’s Rádio Quântica, broadcasting every fourth Wednesday from 16h–18h GMT. You can find archives of previous shows on Mixcloud and Soundcloud.
Before anything else, a moment to recognise Ricardo Bofill, architect, who died earlier this month. His work has been the visual thread running through Flamingo ever since Will picked a photograph of La Muralla Roja for the first ever episode back in June 2018. There have been some fun variations along the way (the lego being one of my favs), but in the end I keep returning to images of this stunning and infinitely photogenic building. So thank you Ricardo Bofill. I hope one day I’ll be able to see the place in person.
This month’s Flamingo flips back and forth between new digital music and plenty of old records I bought in Berlin. I had an especially good time at Power Park in Friedrichshain, a shop that was off my radar until recently but I think will become a staple on future visits. For starters, the first box on your left when you go in is called, simply, “Electro-funk”, something I’ve never seen outside of the States. I spent most of my couple of hours in the shop going through that box and the disco and italo ones next to it. House and techno and the bargain bins will have to wait for future visits. Check out the banger by Tyrone Brunson - an artist I learnt about via Prosumer playing ‘The Smurf’ - and the Prince-aping ‘Cool’ by W.E.O. that kicks off the mix portion of the show.
Of the new music, I’ve got ‘Feel Your Way’ by Teplice on repeat, while I can’t wait to find the right moment to play Phoebe’s ‘Club Tool’ at upcoming gigs. FuFu continues its sterling work collecting music from producers working across East and South Asia, and Argentinian label Innen comes through with another superlative yet free VA EP. A final mention to Parris’s ‘Skater’s World’, which, had I known what it was before the end of last year, would surely have made my end-of-year rundown – it’s completely irresistible.
Thank you to Caldera, Heels & Souls, Duckett and Lakuti for sending me promos.
