2023
Happy new year! I spent the holiday in Denver with friends, a cat, and also, regrettably, a dog (if you’re reading this Tazzy: I love you. I think).
I tweeted a bit about my work from 2022. I’m really proud of it.
My manuscript is due March 1. Mind Game, in case you haven’t heard me rant about it yet, is a book about how elite athletes navigate mental performance and mental illness. It’s due out into your lovely hands in May 2024. By now I’ve taken a first crack at everything except the conclusion; the other chapters are in various states of freelance edits and fact-checks.
This year I’ll have book edits from my publishing house, of course. I’ll continue reporting for Sports Illustrated about transgender athletes and mental health in sports (and maybe also Nickelodeon?). I’ll continue teaching my copy editing class at Catapult. I’m going to SXSW(!) in March to moderate a panel about psychedelics in sports. I also already have an exciting freelance piece lined up for spring. Guess what it’s about, I dare you:

Maybe in the summer and beyond I’ll just ... relax? After all, the last season of Better Call Saul won’t watch itself. (I know, I’m way behind. Sorry, Dad.)
I’ve got a new SI story dropping in a week or two. I think it’s really meaningful. Stay tuned.
Thanks,
Julie
