Today is Give Green Day, a 24-hour opportunity for Spartans everywhere to come together in support of current and future MSU students.
James Madison College is fundraising in support of the Early Start Program. This bridge program helps first-generation students — those whose parents did not attend college — acclimate to campus and build the tools and relationships they need to thrive at JMC.
Early Start launched through the generous gift of JMC alumnus Troy Calkins (IR '88) in 2022, and it has supported nearly 90 Madisonians in the last four years.
Your Give Green Day gifts to Early Start (through the Troy Calkins Student Success Fund) will help this program reach more incoming JMC students.

“As a participant of the Early Start Program, I found that the program helped me tremendously. I never felt alone; I was surrounded by other first-generation students who shared the same concerns, questions and feelings I had. We learned so much about the campus, JMC, and the East Lansing and Lansing community that we already felt acclimated within a couple of days and could call this place our home,” writes Early Start participant Jai P. (PTCD ‘27).
“We also had the opportunity to connect with amazing faculty, learning how to best navigate classes at MSU and JMC, best study practices, and the tremendous amount of research and internship opportunities here in JMC and the Lansing area. If it wasn’t for Early Start, I wouldn't be pursuing my Senior Honors Thesis, focusing on what I love and want to study: ancient philosophy. Being in Early Start definitely gave me an ‘Early Start,’ and it’s a program I hope is sustained for many years to come and that many first-generation students starting out here in JMC get the same opportunities I had and more.”
