Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a court-authorized search warrant at Rep. Ilhan Omar's Washington residence on Monday, October 12, according to reports, as part of a federal investigation into possible fraud and false statements in immigration paperwork. Investigators also issued subpoenas to some of her relatives. The Minnesota Democrat, 44, has represented the state's 5th Congressional District since 2019. One of the sources describes the search as an FBI search, and the precise scope of the investigation remains unclear.
According to people familiar with the matter, authorities are examining Omar's family immigration history, including whether her late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, provided false information or omitted details on immigration forms before becoming a US citizen. Mohamed, a Somali educator and former military officer who later worked as a taxi driver and for the US Postal Service, died in June 2020. Omar's sister, Sahra Noor, a healthcare professional and author, has reportedly received a subpoena, as has at least one other person in the family's circle. Noor did not respond to requests for comment. A grand jury subpoena is a tool for gathering evidence and does not by itself indicate that the recipient is suspected of a crime.
Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, and fled with her family at age eight during the civil war. They spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before moving to the United States in the 1990s. She has repeatedly denied allegations of immigration fraud, including claims that she married her brother to help him enter the country. No public evidence has established that her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, was her brother. Omar married political consultant Tim Mynett in March 2020. His firm, E Street Group, provided services to her 2019-2020 campaign, drawing a Federal Election Commission complaint alleging improper use and reporting of campaign funds. Omar, Mynett and the campaign denied wrongdoing, and the FEC found no reason to believe funds had been converted to personal use.
The search comes amid continuing tension between the Trump administration and Democratic officials over immigration enforcement, federal authority and the Justice Department's investigative powers. In a CBS12 interview, Jody Weis, a former Chicago Police superintendent and former FBI special agent in charge, discussed the Omar search alongside a separate ICE shooting in New York City, in which an agent fired on a suspect who officials say rammed government vehicles while trying to evade arrest. The suspect survived, and New York City leaders have questioned the agent's actions.
It is not yet known whether charges will be filed against Omar or any relative, and no charges have been announced. Further developments are expected as investigators review materials seized and gather additional testimony through subpoenas. The case is likely to remain politically charged given Omar's prominence and the broader dispute over federal immigration enforcement.
