Paxton Wins Texas GOP Senate Runoff, Sets Up November Race Against Democrat Talarico
ms.now | newsweek.com | twitchy.com

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton defeated four-term incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in Tuesday's Republican primary runoff, securing the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate seat with approximately 62 percent of the vote. Paxton will now face Democratic state Rep. James Talarico in the November general election, a contest that national observers are watching closely as a potential test of Democratic competitiveness in Texas.

Paxton, who entered the race with strong name recognition built over three terms as state attorney general, carried the endorsement of President Donald Trump, who had called him a "MAGA Warrior." Cornyn, a veteran of four Senate terms, had warned earlier this year that Paxton's political baggage could produce a Republican "massacre" in Texas in November. Talarico, a Presbyterian pastor and state lawmaker who defeated Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the March Democratic primary, responded to Paxton's projected win Tuesday by posting a video on social media calling Paxton "the most corrupt politician in America."

Paxton's tenure as attorney general has been marked by both high-profile legal battles and significant scandal. He gained national prominence through lawsuits challenging federal immigration policies, abortion rights, COVID-19 mandates and the results of the 2020 presidential election, but he also faced a long-running securities fraud investigation and a 2023 impeachment by the Republican-controlled Texas House on corruption and abuse-of-office allegations. He was subsequently acquitted by the Texas state Senate.

Polling ahead of the general election has shown a competitive race, though no recent surveys have been conducted since early May. A late April poll by the Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center found both candidates tied at 45 percent among registered Texas voters, while earlier April polls showed Talarico with leads ranging from 4 to 8 percentage points. Betting markets as of Tuesday evening gave Republicans a 54 percent chance of holding the seat.

The outcome will test whether Democrats can capture statewide office in Texas for the first time this century, in what is already a high-stakes midterm election cycle shaped in part by intra-Republican primary battles. Paxton's victory adds to a string of wins for Trump-backed candidates, following the defeats of Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky and Sen. Bill Cassidy in Louisiana.
