Trump Declares Ceasefire 'Over' as U.S. and Iran Trade Strikes Over Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump declared Wednesday that the ceasefire and interim agreement between the United States and Iran are "over" after the two countries exchanged military strikes centered on the Strait of Hormuz. The escalation began when Iran attacked three commercial vessels in the strategic waterway, prompting U.S. Central Command to strike more than 80 Iranian targets, including air defense systems, command and control networks, coastal radar sites, anti-ship missile capabilities, and more than 60 small boats belonging to Iran's Revolutionary Guard. U.S. officials described the strikes, carried out by Air Force jets and Navy tactical aircraft, as larger than previous American retaliatory actions against Iran.
Iran responded by launching ballistic missiles and drones at U.S. Gulf allies Bahrain and Kuwait. Kuwait's military confirmed it intercepted two ballistic missiles and 13 drones that breached its airspace, with authorities reporting no casualties. Iran did not formally claim responsibility for the earlier attacks on commercial ships, though Iranian state media said at least one vessel had ignored warnings from Iranian forces.
Trump, speaking at a NATO summit in Turkey, said negotiations with Iran were "just a waste of time" while allowing diplomats to continue talks. Iran's Foreign Ministry said U.S. and Israeli actions had "rendered key and fundamental elements of the agreement to end the war ineffective," though Tehran had not formally declared the ceasefire finished as of Wednesday morning. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf wrote on social media that "the era of bullying and extortion is over."
At the heart of the dispute is control over the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of global oil and commercial cargo transits. Under a June 17 memorandum of understanding, Iran agreed to use its "best efforts" to ensure safe passage of commercial vessels for 60 days at no charge, but Iran has since demanded ships coordinate with Iranian authorities and declared IMO-designated routes unacceptable. The International Maritime Organization's secretary-general, Arsenio Dominguez, condemned the attacks, noting that several hundred ships carrying approximately 6,000 seafarers remain stranded in the Persian Gulf with no exit route other than the Strait of Hormuz.
The renewed hostilities come as Iran holds a multi-day state funeral for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the U.S.-Israeli strikes that began the conflict in February. Negotiations between Washington and Tehran had been paused pending the conclusion of funeral proceedings on Thursday, but the fresh exchange of strikes has deepened uncertainty over whether any peace process can be revived. Trump separately warned that Iran had placed him at the top of its targeting list and said the country must not be permitted to acquire a nuclear weapon.
