Florida Primaries Deliver Upsets for Trump, Democrats as Progressive Nixon Stuns Vindman

Tuesday's primary elections in Florida, Wyoming, Alaska and a California special election produced a series of notable upsets, most prominently in Florida where progressive state lawmaker Angie Nixon defeated nationally known former national security official Alexander Vindman in a Democratic Senate primary. Nixon, a former labor activist who raised less than $1 million, defeated Vindman despite being outspent by more than 16 to 1. Vindman had gained national prominence through his testimony during President Trump's first impeachment hearing in 2019.
Nixon's win was not the only surprise of the night. In Florida's 7th Congressional District, former television journalist Ryan Elijah defeated incumbent Rep. Cory Mills in the Republican primary despite Mills having received an early endorsement from Trump. In Florida's 19th District, conservative talk radio station owner Jim Schwartzel defeated Trump-backed Catalina Lauf for the Republican nomination. In Wyoming, state Sen. Eric Barlow won the GOP gubernatorial primary over state Superintendent Megan Degenfelder, whom Trump had endorsed, continuing a pattern of Trump-backed candidates falling short in governor's races this cycle.
Not all results cut against the party establishments. Republican Rep. Byron Donalds, backed by Trump, won the Florida gubernatorial nomination and will face Democrat David Jolly, a former Republican-turned-independent who recently joined the Democratic Party. If Donalds wins in November, he would become Florida's first Black governor. On the Democratic side, longtime Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz held off a crowded primary field that included Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who had resigned earlier in the year under a federal indictment and the threat of House ethics sanctions.
The results carry significant implications for both parties heading into November's midterm elections. Nixon will face Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in a special election for the final two years of the Senate seat formerly held by Marco Rubio, who vacated it to become Trump's secretary of state. Democratic strategists speaking anonymously noted that while Nixon's victory was a sign of progressive momentum, Florida's increasingly Republican lean makes the Senate seat a long shot regardless of the nominee. Tuesday's contests were also the first held under Florida's newly redrawn congressional map, which observers say was designed to favor Republicans and could sharply limit Democratic representation among the state's 28 House seats.
