U.S. and Iran Agree to Two-Week Ceasefire; Fighting Continues in Lebanon, Bahrain Struck

The United States and Iran reached a two-week ceasefire agreement late Tuesday, with President Trump announcing the deal shortly after midnight EDT and calling it a "big day for World Peace." The ceasefire is conditioned on Iran immediately reopening the Strait of Hormuz and halting all attacks on the U.S., Israel and regional partners. Pakistan, which served as a mediator alongside Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, confirmed the agreement.
Both governments claimed the outcome as a victory. Trump said on Truth Social that the U.S. would assist with shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, which carries roughly 20 percent of the world's daily oil supply, and predicted large economic gains from its reopening. Iran-backed militias in Iraq, operating under the banner of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, announced a corresponding two-week suspension of attacks on what they described as "enemy bases" in the region, and Iraq subsequently reopened its airspace, which had been closed due to the conflict.
The ceasefire does not extend to Lebanon, where Israeli forces continued strikes Wednesday, killing at least four people in the coastal city of Tyre. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office confirmed Israel supports Trump's decision to suspend strikes against Iran but stated explicitly that the agreement does not cover the ongoing war with Hezbollah. Lebanon's army warned displaced civilians against returning to the country's south as Israeli attacks persisted, and Hezbollah had not issued a public statement as of Wednesday.
Explosions were reported in Bahrain's capital Manama in the hours following the ceasefire announcement. Bahrain's interior ministry said civil defense crews extinguished a fire at a facility it attributed to what it called "the sinful Iranian aggression," and two people were slightly injured by shrapnel from an intercepted Iranian drone in the Sitra area. The King Fahd Causeway connecting Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, closed briefly over concerns about incoming fire, was later reopened.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on all parties to abide by the ceasefire terms and comply with international law, including the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure. The International Air Transport Association warned that even with the Strait of Hormuz open, jet fuel supplies and prices could take months to normalize due to damage to refining capacity in the region. Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, also called on "all people of goodwill" to reject war and pursue peace, referencing Trump's earlier threats against civilian infrastructure in Iran as violations of international law.
