Trump Rejects Iran Ceasefire Counterproposal, Calls Talks 'Totally Unacceptable' as Strait of Hormuz Closure Persists
CBS News Colorado | Associated Press | aljazeera.com
|
|
President Donald Trump on Sunday rejected Iran's latest counterproposal to end the two-month-old war in the Middle East, declaring the offer 'totally unacceptable' and accusing Tehran of 'playing games.' Trump described the ceasefire as being on 'life support' and claimed Iran had backed away from an earlier agreement that would have allowed the United States to help extract its highly enriched uranium. Iran's proposal was transmitted through mediator Pakistan.
Iran's counterproposal, as reported by Iranian media and people familiar with its contents, called for a halt to hostilities on all fronts — including in Lebanon, where Israel has conducted airstrikes and a ground invasion — before addressing broader issues such as Tehran's nuclear program and support for regional proxy groups. On the question of Iran's estimated 440 kilograms of highly enriched uranium, Tehran proposed diluting some of the stockpile and transferring the remainder to a third country, while offering to suspend enrichment for a shorter period than the 20-year moratorium the United States demanded. Iran rejected any dismantling of its nuclear facilities outright.
The core impasse centers on sequencing. Tehran wants hostilities to end before nuclear negotiations begin, while Trump has insisted that Iran must first reopen the Strait of Hormuz — a critical waterway through which roughly one-fifth of global oil and natural gas exports move during peacetime — and address its nuclear capabilities as a precondition. Iran's de facto closure of the strait followed U.S. and Israeli strikes on the country beginning February 28, and a continued U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports has further complicated ceasefire efforts. Both sides have continued to attack, capture, and intercept ships in the region.
Trump is traveling to Beijing to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, partly in hopes of enlisting China's leverage over Iran to advance a resolution. China is the world's largest buyer of Iranian oil and has been working diplomatically through Pakistan to help broker a peace agreement. However, White House officials have set low expectations for a breakthrough on Iran specifically, expressing concern that the dispute not derail broader U.S.-China negotiations on trade and fentanyl precursor exports.
On the ground, the conflict continues to expand beyond Iran's borders. Israel has deployed Iron Dome anti-missile batteries and personnel to the United Arab Emirates, a move acknowledged by U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee at a Tel Aviv conference, reflecting growing defense cooperation among Abraham Accords nations wary of Iran. Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed six people and wounded seven others on Tuesday, despite a ceasefire agreement there. With talks stalled and the Strait of Hormuz still closed, analysts and officials see little near-term path to a durable settlement.
