Earthquake Collapses Shopping Mall in Southern Japan, Multiple Deaths Reported in Kumamoto Prefecture
CBS News Colorado | cnn.com | independent.co.uk

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck southern Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday afternoon local time, triggering fires, collapsing buildings, and causing an explosion at a major shopping mall that left multiple people dead and many others trapped. The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded the quake at magnitude 7.1, reaching the highest possible intensity level of seven on Japan's Shindo shaking scale, while the U.S. Geological Survey measured it at 6.8. The tremor hit at 4:27 p.m. local time, with aftershocks continuing for at least 30 minutes, including a magnitude 4.2 aftershock reported around 7 p.m.

The most severe incident occurred at the Aeon Mall in Kashima Town, where an explosion of undetermined cause caused the second floor of the building to partially collapse, trapping an unknown number of people inside. Police told Japanese broadcaster TBS there were "quite a few" presumed dead at the site, and a local police source described "a lot of deaths," though authorities had not released an official death toll as of early reports. Emergency crews were conducting search and rescue operations at the mall, while mall operator Aeon said it was evacuating customers and assessing the situation.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi confirmed injuries and widespread infrastructure damage, urging residents to evacuate to safe locations and remain alert. NHK footage showed collapsed and burning buildings, large road cracks, a buckled elevated highway, and a derailed freight train. Approximately 40,000 to 45,000 households lost electricity in the Kumamoto region, and mobile phone services were disrupted in some areas. Chipmaker TSMC evacuated workers from its nearby plant as a precaution.

Authorities initially issued a tsunami warning for southwestern coastlines of Kyushu island but lifted it after a few hours. The Nuclear Regulation Authority reported no abnormalities at nuclear power plants in the region, and Kyushu Electric Power confirmed that three operating reactors were functioning normally. Japan is one of the world's most seismically active nations, experiencing hundreds of earthquakes each year.

The disaster drew immediate comparisons to the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, a sequence that included a magnitude 6.5 and a magnitude 7.3 tremor two days apart, killing between 273 and 278 people and injuring more than 2,700. Residents and local officials described Tuesday's shaking as reminiscent of that event. With search and rescue operations ongoing and casualty figures still being confirmed, the full scale of deaths and damage remained uncertain.
