U.S.-Iran Ceasefire Diplomacy Advances as Pakistan Shuttles New Proposal to Tehran

A Pakistani military delegation led by army chief Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on Wednesday carrying a fresh message from Washington, in the latest effort to sustain diplomatic momentum between the United States and Iran. The visit follows a first round of high-level talks held April 11-12 in Islamabad, which lasted more than 20 hours but concluded without a formal agreement or memorandum of understanding. The two-week ceasefire that halted nearly six weeks of fighting is set to expire April 22, creating a narrow window for negotiations.
The Islamabad talks, mediated by Pakistan, represented the most significant direct engagement between Washington and Tehran in decades. U.S. Vice President JD Vance led the American delegation, while Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf headed the Iranian side. Vance said Iran chose 'not to accept our terms' and reiterated that Washington requires a 'fundamental commitment' from Tehran not to develop nuclear weapons; Ghalibaf countered that the U.S. had failed to gain the trust of his delegation.
Core issues under discussion include Iran's nuclear program, sanctions relief, Iran's frozen assets, and control of the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports. On Wednesday, the AP cited unnamed regional officials as saying Washington and Tehran had reached an 'in principle agreement' to extend the ceasefire to allow further diplomacy, though a U.S. official quoted by Reuters said no formal extension had been agreed. President Trump said Tuesday the war is 'very close to being over' and suggested a second round of talks could resume within days, again potentially in Islamabad.
The conflict has killed more than 4,000 people across the Middle East, overwhelmingly in Iran and Lebanon, since fighting began. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is conducting a regional tour this week, with stops including Saudi Arabia and Turkey, to build support for the mediation process and reduce the risk of a return to full-scale war. The coming days are considered critical, with the ceasefire expiration deadline serving as the immediate pressure point for both sides to reach at least a preliminary framework.
