Hurricane Lowell Threatens Hawaiian Islands With Life-Threatening Surf, Flooding

Hurricane Lowell, a powerful Category 4 storm, is bearing down on the Hawaiian island chain and is expected to produce life-threatening surf, widespread flooding, and mudslides even as its forecast track has it passing just west of the major islands by Monday night. As of Saturday, the storm was located approximately 640 miles south-southwest of Honolulu, moving west-northwest at 7 mph with sustained winds of 145 mph. The National Hurricane Center warned that Kauai could receive up to 10 inches of rain, while Maui could see up to 8 inches.
Lowell briefly intensified to Category 5 status — with sustained winds of 157 mph or greater — overnight Friday before weakening slightly into Category 4 range. The storm's projected path is expected to trigger storm watch notices for Kauai County and the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. National Weather Service meteorologist John Bravender cautioned at a Friday news conference that proximity to the forecast cone's edge does not guarantee safety.
Hawaii Gov. Josh Green urged residents, particularly those in Kauai County, to complete emergency preparations and avoid floodwaters and dangerous surf. State officials said they are securing harbors, deploying emergency personnel to strategic locations, and monitoring dams for possible breaches or overflows. The warning comes weeks after Tropical Storm Lala brought intense flooding and strong winds to parts of Oahu and the Big Island.
Lowell is one of three simultaneous tropical cyclones active in the northern Pacific. Hurricane Karina, a former Category 4 storm, was spinning roughly 755 miles east-northeast of Hilo, while Tropical Storm Marie was churning about 705 miles west of the southern tip of Baja California. Meteorologists said Marie could generate high surf along the Southern California coast during the holiday weekend.
The three-storm cluster is part of a notably active Northeast Pacific hurricane season, which has produced 15 named storms to date, according to Colorado State University. Experts attribute the elevated activity to unusually warm sea surface temperatures and the presence of an El Niño weather pattern, which is also expected to bring potentially historic rainfall to California in the coming months.
