Suspected gunman killed after opening fire at White House checkpoint; bystander wounded

A man opened fire at a White House security checkpoint Saturday evening and was shot dead by Secret Service agents in an exchange of gunfire, federal officials confirmed. The shooting occurred shortly before 6 p.m. local time at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. A bystander was also wounded in the incident, though the Secret Service said it remained unclear whether the bystander was struck by the suspect's initial gunfire or during the subsequent exchange with officers.
CBS News, citing law enforcement sources, identified the suspect as Nasire Best, 21, who had been known to both the Secret Service and the Metropolitan Police Department. Sources told CBS that Best had attempted to enter White House grounds without authorization in July 2025, was arrested, and subsequently spent time at a psychiatric facility. He had reportedly been living in Washington, D.C., for approximately 18 months and used a revolver in Saturday's attack. No Secret Service personnel were injured, and President Donald Trump, who was in the White House at the time, was not affected.
Trump praised law enforcement in a post on Truth Social, thanking the Secret Service for their "swift and professional action" against what he described as a gunman with a "violent history and possible obsession" with the White House. Trump also used the incident to reference his plans to construct a new, more secure ballroom on White House grounds, noting the shooting occurred roughly one month after a separate gunman opened fire at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner at a Washington hotel.
Reporters stationed on and near the North Lawn were ushered into the White House briefing room as the incident unfolded. ABC News correspondent Selina Wang posted video showing her taking cover as volleys of gunfire rang out across the North Lawn. Witnesses estimated between 20 and 30 shots were fired. The Secret Service confirmed the incident remains under investigation, and road closures around the White House were expected to remain in place overnight.
