Israel Strikes Iranian Oil Facilities in Tehran, Killing at Least Four
aljazeera.com

Israeli air strikes hit oil storage and production facilities in and around Tehran on Saturday, igniting large fires and killing at least four tanker drivers. The attacked sites included the Aghdasieh oil warehouse in northeast Tehran, the Tehran refinery in the south, the Shahran oil depot in the west, and an oil depot in Karaj city in Alborz province. Witnesses reported oil from the Shahran depot had leaked into surrounding streets, and thick black smoke blanketed large portions of the Iranian capital.
Israel said the targeted fuel storage facilities were being used to support Iranian military infrastructure. Iranian state media characterized the strikes as a joint attack by the United States and Israel, a description that reflects Tehran's position on the broader conflict. Iranian authorities said fuel distribution had not been interrupted and that security forces were engaged in firefighting operations at the affected sites.
The strikes mark the first time Israeli forces have targeted Iranian oil facilities since the current conflict began, according to Al Jazeera's correspondent in Tehran. The reporter described witnessing black residue falling on windows early Sunday morning and warned of serious risks from toxic air in the capital. He noted the attacks on civil industrial infrastructure represented an escalation beyond previous strikes on fuel depots seen during an earlier round of fighting in June.
The strikes on Saturday came on the ninth consecutive day of joint Israeli and U.S. operations against Iran, which have killed more than 1,300 people in Iran and approximately 300 in Lebanon, according to the report. About a dozen people have been killed in Israel. Analysts cited in the reporting suggested the oil facility strikes serve both a strategic purpose — limiting Iranian troop mobility — and a psychological one, though Iran's size and the breadth of its fuel infrastructure make a total supply crisis unlikely in the near term.
