Japan's Orphaned Monkey Punch Turns 1, Receives 2,500 Birthday Messages from Around the World

Punch, a Japanese macaque at the Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden in Ichikawa, Japan, marked his first birthday Sunday, drawing thousands of well-wishing cards and messages from fans across Japan and internationally. The zoo has received approximately 2,500 birthday cards, many of which are displayed at an indoor birthday exhibit where visitors can also watch video footage documenting Punch's first year of life.
Punch was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth, presumably due to exhaustion, and was nursed back to health by zookeepers who gave him a stuffed orangutan toy to help develop the gripping ability that newborn macaques require to survive. After six months of specialized care, Punch was introduced in mid-January to the zoo's general monkey enclosure, home to some 50 other monkeys. When images of Punch clinging to the plush toy for comfort after being pushed away by other monkeys were posted to social media in February, they became an immediate global sensation.
Takashi Yasunaga, head of the zoo, said the viral attention drove tens of thousands of visitors to the facility, with roughly half traveling from overseas. Yasunaga credited two dedicated keepers for Punch's survival, saying, "As Punch was trying very hard struggling to live each day, his two keepers did everything they can while other staff watched over him." Fans rallied around the young monkey on social media under the hashtag #HangInTherePunch.
Visitors at the birthday exhibit described a personal connection to Punch's story. Kumi Ishizawa, a Kobe resident who attended the exhibit, said that setting a goal to visit Punch helped motivate her recovery from illness. Yeye Lights, a longtime Ichikawa resident who had never previously visited the zoo, said she purchased an annual pass after her daughter in the Philippines alerted her to Punch's story, and she brought a cake to mark the birthday.
Punch has since integrated into the monkey enclosure and is now difficult to distinguish from the other animals, zoo officials said. Despite no longer carrying the stuffed toy, he continues to draw large crowds, and his story is widely credited with resonating beyond simple animal interest, reflecting themes of perseverance and the desire for social acceptance.
