Trump Approves Emergency Declaration for Indiana After Storms Kill 5, Trigger Major Flooding
CBS News Colorado | 21alivenews.com | wfyi.org

President Donald Trump approved a Presidential Emergency Declaration for Indiana on Saturday, unlocking up to $5 million in federal assistance following severe storms that struck the state beginning August 11. The storms, which produced straight-line winds, tornadoes and widespread flooding, have been blamed for at least five deaths across Indiana.
The declaration came after a Saturday morning phone call between Trump and Indiana Gov. Mike Braun, who had already declared a statewide emergency. FEMA said the federal assistance will supplement state, tribal and local response efforts, covering costs for water rescues and evacuations, sandbagging and flood-fighting operations, emergency shelters and supplies, and medical transportation and debris clearing. Fifteen counties and multiple municipalities have also issued local disaster declarations, and Indiana's State Emergency Operations Center remains activated.
The storms brought winds of up to 99 mph in Gary and as much as 10 inches of rain in parts of central Indiana, with nearly a third of the state's counties reporting wind damage. Indianapolis experienced flooding not seen in more than 30 years, with the National Weather Service saying the event could approach a 100-year flood. The White River reached peak flood levels on the north side of Marion County Saturday evening, though engineers warned that peak levels would hold for several hours before receding and that floodwaters would continue moving downstream, with river gauges expected to peak near Raymond Street around 2 a.m. Sunday.
In the Rocky Ripple neighborhood of Indianapolis, hundreds of volunteers gathered at Hohlt Park to fill sandbags and reinforce levees, with reports of a breach on 54th Street Saturday evening. Town Councilor Megan Hulland said crews exhausted available sandbags, though more than 1,000 additional bags were reported to be en route from Shelby County. In Gary, power restoration efforts by NIPSCO were briefly halted after a worker's vehicle was struck by gunfire, though no injuries were reported; the utility said it expects 90 percent of affected customers to have power restored by Tuesday and full restoration by the following Friday.
