Trump Announces Russia-Ukraine 'Energy Ceasefire' as Moscow Stays Silent and Kyiv Says It Learned of It From Media
nbcnews.com | CBS News Colorado | theguardian.com

|
President Donald Trump announced Sunday on Truth Social that an "ENERGY CEASEFIRE" between Russia and Ukraine was in effect "immediately," writing that "both parties have agreed. Do not break it!" He gave no details on what the arrangement would cover. Moscow has not confirmed it, and Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said only that "contacts are ongoing" and that Russia would provide information when it had something to say.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the announcement "was news for me" and that Ukraine "learned from the media." He told the Warsaw Security Forum that Kyiv supports the idea but has not heard Russia approve it, calling that "strange." In a statement on social media, Zelenskyy said Ukraine's armed forces had received all appropriate orders and that Kyiv was awaiting details of the U.S.-Russia dialogue. He also said he had discussed the proposal with leaders of Canada, Finland and NATO. Ukrainian officials said Russia kept striking energy infrastructure in the hours after Trump's post and on Monday morning, including a power plant or energy facility in and near Kharkiv. CBS News said it had asked the White House for clarification.
The announcement followed several days of tension between Washington and Kyiv. On Friday the United States agreed to lift sanctions on Russian fuel in a deal Trump said would see Russia release 300,000 tons of diesel to the American and global market, followed by 500,000 tons in November and another million after that. Trump also demanded that Kyiv halt attacks on Russian oil refineries and on Saturday suggested Ukraine "get a new leader who can make a deal." Zelenskyy responded that Russia alone is responsible for the war, and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Ukrainians have the right to choose their leader. Trump made a similar ceasefire announcement about a month ago, and aerial attacks by both sides continued afterward.
Zelenskyy told ABC News' "This Week" that Ukraine is ready to stop striking Russian refineries if Russia stops attacking Ukrainian energy infrastructure, and that he would hold elections if Russia agreed to a 60-day ceasefire. He disputed Trump's attempt to link high fuel prices to the war in Ukraine, saying the world understands the price increases stem from the war in the Middle East. Trump has blamed the Ukraine conflict rather than the U.S. military campaign against Iran, launched in February, for a global fuel shortage that has pushed diesel prices to record highs. Ukraine continued its long-range campaign on Sunday, with a drone attack shutting down a Yandex data center, the third strike on the company's facilities in four days.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney both voiced support for an energy ceasefire. Burnham said it was "the best route to get energy and fuel back into world markets." Carney, however, criticized the U.S.-Russia diesel deal, saying it undermined efforts to ensure stability in Europe and end the war. Whether the ceasefire takes hold depends on whether Russia publicly commits to it and on what terms Washington and Moscow settle. The war has now run more than four and a half years, with the armies largely deadlocked on the front line and both sides relying on long-range strikes.
