U.S. and Iran Announce Ceasefire Deal, Strait of Hormuz to Reopen Under Agreement

The United States and Iran have agreed to an immediate and permanent cessation of hostilities, President Donald Trump announced Sunday on Truth Social, declaring the Strait of Hormuz open to toll-free shipping and authorizing the removal of a U.S. naval blockade. Iran's Supreme National Security Council confirmed the agreement via state news outlet Tasnim, saying all warfare between the parties would cease "immediately and permanently from tonight." Iran's deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi also confirmed the deal publicly.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the agreement on X minutes before Trump's statement, crediting mediation efforts by Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. A formal signing ceremony is scheduled for Friday, June 19, in Switzerland, with Sharif indicating "pre-implementation discussions" would take place in the interim. Trump indicated the Strait would open officially upon the Friday signing, in part to allow for mine removal operations, though the U.S. military has not confirmed that Iran placed mines in the waterway.
The conflict began February 28, when the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes across Iran, including the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. A ceasefire had previously been reached but fighting continued on multiple fronts, including in Lebanon. Trump said in a separate post that the deal would bring "peace and security to the whole region" and suggested a more comprehensive agreement would follow, adding in a New York Times interview that the U.S. could resume military operations or take on a broader regional security role in exchange for revenues if terms were not honored.
Israel's position adds uncertainty to the agreement's durability. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Monday that Israeli forces would remain indefinitely in territory seized in Lebanon, Gaza, and Syria, and warned that any Iranian strike on Israel in response to ongoing Israeli operations would draw retaliation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was seeking a meeting with Trump, possibly in Washington, to discuss the deal, according to an Israeli official briefed on the matter. The Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of global oil shipments pass, has been largely closed since the conflict began in late February.
