U.S. and Iran Exchange Strikes After Three American Service Members Killed; Oil Tops $90 a Barrel

The United States launched a new round of airstrikes against Iran early Monday, targeting military command centers, air defense sites, coastal surveillance installations, maritime capabilities, and missile and drone launch sites, according to the U.S. military. The strikes came in retaliation for a series of Iranian attacks that killed three American service members and left one missing over the preceding days. President Donald Trump confirmed the offensive, saying, "We hit them very hard again tonight."
Two of the deaths occurred Friday and Saturday when Iranian missiles struck Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. The Pentagon identified the fallen soldiers as First Lieutenant Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, assigned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Private Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas, assigned to Ansbach, Germany. A third service member was killed Saturday in northern Iraq during a controlled detonation of an unexploded ordnance found on a downed Iranian attack drone, while a fourth soldier initially listed as missing was subsequently found, with the military reporting that unidentified remains were recovered Sunday and sent for examination.
Iran responded to the U.S. strikes by launching attacks against Bahrain, home to the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet, and Kuwait, while also striking tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian media reported U.S. hits near Tabriz, believed to house underground missile bases, and Bushehr, home to Iran's only operational civilian nuclear power plant. Benchmark Brent crude rose above $90 a barrel Monday, deepening a global energy crisis as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which previously carried roughly a fifth of global oil and gas supplies, has slowed to a trickle.
The escalating exchange has pushed both nations closer to all-out war despite an interim memorandum of understanding reached last month that was intended to halt attacks and open the strait over a 60-day implementation period. Mediators including Qatar and Pakistan have continued to engage both sides. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Monday that diplomatic channels remained active, while U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington remained open to negotiations but that any talks "have to be real."
