Rep. Ilhan Omar Says She Will Leave Washington Home After Federal Agents Search It in Immigration Fraud Probe
theguardian.com | pbs.org
|
|
Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, said Wednesday that she will move out of her Washington, D.C., home after federal agents searched it last week. In her first interview since the Oct. 12 search, given to MS NOW host Chris Hayes, she said the publicity has made her address public and left her family unsafe, citing death threats. "I can't continue to live there," Omar said, adding that she did not want her children visiting while people tracked them.
Omar said 15 to 25 Homeland Security Investigations agents surrounded the residence around 6 a.m. and pounded on the door while she, her husband and her 20-year-old son were inside. She said agents broke the front door as she dressed to answer it, then executed a search warrant that lasted four to five hours. They seized 17 items, including phones, notebooks, a Somali-language children's book and a vintage camera that was a gift to her husband. Omar described the agents as "intrusive but polite," saying they logged what they took and returned everything else to its place. She also said she believed the early hour was meant to rattle her.
According to a person briefed on the matter who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, federal authorities are investigating potential fraud in her family's immigration paperwork and have issued grand jury subpoenas to some of her relatives. The Justice Department has said only that it is a criminal investigation. Omar, who was born in Somalia, came to the U.S. with her family at age 12 after they obtained asylum and became a naturalized citizen in 2000. She said she is "confident in the fact that I didn't do anything wrong," and she denied allegations of immigration fraud, remarking that it would be a leap to indict a 12-year-old for conspiring to defraud immigration services.
The search follows a long-running feud between Omar and President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly criticized her character, faith and Somali heritage. On Tuesday, Trump called her a "sick, very dishonest person who hates our country." Asked whether she could face deportation over alleged misstatements in her immigration paperwork, he said, "Well, she could be. She could also go to jail." Allies of the president, including cabinet officials and right-wing influencers, have promoted unsubstantiated claims that she married her brother, which Omar says originated on a Somali blog before being picked up by conspiracy theorists in Minneapolis. She said she believes the raid was meant to appease Trump loyalists.
The search drew sharp condemnation from congressional Democrats, who questioned its timing less than three weeks before the Nov. 3 midterm elections that will determine control of the House and Senate. The Justice Department has historically avoided overt investigative steps involving candidates shortly before an election. Omar is seeking reelection in a heavily Democratic district centered on Minneapolis and is expected to keep her seat. The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been announced.
