Trump Demands Iran's 'Unconditional Surrender' as U.S. Strikes Enter Second Week, Russia Reported Aiding Tehran
CBS News Colorado | nbcnews.com | aljazeera.com
|
|
President Donald Trump declared Friday that any resolution to the U.S.-Iran conflict must result in Iran's "unconditional surrender," rejecting the prospect of a negotiated settlement even as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian confirmed that unnamed countries are pursuing diplomatic mediation efforts. Trump posted the demand on Truth Social, adding that after surrender the U.S. and its allies would work to rebuild Iran economically under new leadership. The statement marks a significant hardening of stated U.S. war objectives and appears to foreclose compromise options that had been signaled by Iran's government.
U.S. Central Command reported that in the first seven days of Operation Epic Fury, American forces have struck more than 3,000 targets and damaged or destroyed 43 Iranian ships. Strikes continued Friday night near Tehran's Mehrabad airport, where Iranian state media and the semiofficial Tasnim news agency reported multiple explosions and large fires visible from the city. The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad issued an emergency alert urging American citizens in Iraq to depart immediately, warning that Iran-aligned militant groups may be planning attacks on Americans at hotels and other locations, as commercial flights in and out of Iraq have ceased.
A serious new complication emerged Friday when four sources told NBC News that Russia is providing Iran with intelligence on the locations of U.S. forces in the Middle East, including the positions of American warships, radar installations, and communication systems. The sources said there is no current indication that Russian intelligence is being used to direct Iranian missile or drone strikes, but the assistance could improve Iran's targeting capabilities. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, in an interview set to air Sunday on CBS News' "60 Minutes," said Trump is "well aware of who's talking to who" and that anything that "shouldn't be happening" is being confronted.
A separate and potentially significant development involves a deadly airstrike on a girls' primary school in the southern Iranian city of Minab on the opening day of the conflict, Feb. 28. U.S. investigators now believe the United States may have been responsible for the strike, which Iranian authorities said killed approximately 180 pupils and staff, including children ages 7 to 12, according to a person familiar with the ongoing inquiry. The assessment is based in part on the fact that U.S. forces were operating in the area while Israeli aircraft were not, though White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said the investigation is ongoing and no final conclusions have been reached. UNICEF has reported that at least 1,332 people have been killed in Iran since the conflict began, including 181 children.
A dozen Senate Democrats, including Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, issued a letter Friday criticizing the strikes as "reckless and poorly conceived" and blaming the conflict for sharp increases in global oil prices. The senators also criticized Trump for temporarily waiving sanctions to allow India to more easily purchase Russian oil, arguing the move enriches Vladimir Putin and undermines pressure on Moscow. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Thursday that the U.S. plan for a "clean rapid military victory failed" and warned that any follow-on strategy would also fall short, as Iranian officials publicly maintain readiness for a prolonged conflict.
