Trump Threatens Global Economic Consequences for Nations Doing Business With Iran, Drawing Chinese Pushback
CBS News Colorado | theguardian.com | aljazeera.com

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday what he called the 'most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country,' threatening severe economic consequences against any nation whose financial institutions, businesses, airports or government entities provide support to Iran. Writing on Truth Social, Trump declared an 'Economic D-Day' and demanded an immediate halt to oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries and front companies used to sustain Iran's economy.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reinforced the announcement Thursday, calling the effort 'the greatest coordinated economic isolation in the history of the world' and telling allies they are 'either with us or against us.' Bessent specifically called on China — Iran's largest trading partner — to 'get with the program,' while acknowledging that many conversations with Beijing are best held privately. China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian responded Friday that 'sanctions and pressure will not help resolve the issue' and called on all parties to pursue political and diplomatic solutions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the threats as a distraction from American domestic problems, while Iranian state media characterized the announcement as nothing new, noting that Tehran has spent years developing methods to circumvent economic restrictions.

The escalation follows a significant shift in U.S. strategy after weeks of nightly military strikes on Iran failed to bring Tehran back to the negotiating table. Pentagon advisers reportedly told Trump last month that the U.S. had nearly exhausted its target list in Iran and that the military campaign had reached the limits of its effectiveness, prompting the pivot toward economic pressure. The U.S. Treasury has been conducting Operation Economic Fury for months, combining targeted sanctions with a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz aimed at cutting off Iranian oil exports. Iranian crude exports have already fallen from roughly 1.3 to 1.5 million barrels per day before the war to below 300,000 barrels per day in May.

Analysts warn that enforcing Trump's threat through secondary sanctions — penalties on countries that continue buying Iranian oil — risks a direct confrontation with China at a sensitive moment in U.S.-China trade relations. Gregory Brew, a senior analyst at the Eurasia Group, noted that any new measures will need to target Iran's trading partners but said it will be 'hard for the U.S. to direct such actions at China.' Iran demonstrated the complexity of the situation this week when it finalized an oil export agreement with Tajikistan, even as the United Arab Emirates announced an indefinite trade embargo on Iran following Iranian ballistic missile strikes on its territory. The White House has not yet specified which countries or institutions will face consequences or what form those penalties will take.
