Mountain Gorilla Trekking 🦍 | 15 Years (Strictly enforced) | Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) |
Chimpanzee Tracking 🐒 | 12 Years | Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) |
Why the 15-Year Age Requirement is Strictly Enforced 🛑
⛰️ Physical Demands & Terrain: Rainforest treks involve navigating steep ridges, dense underbrush, and slippery slopes. Participants must maintain a consistent pace alongside park rangers.
🤫 Behavioural Control at Close Proximity: Mountain gorilla encounters occur in open rainforest settings. Trekkers must remain calm, quiet, and motionless on command to avoid provoking the silverback or disturbing the family unit.
🩺 Health & Pathogen Management: Primates share over 98% of human DNA, making them vulnerable to airborne human infections. Age limits ensure participants can strictly follow hygiene and distance protocols.
📑 Passport Verification: UWA rangers inspect original passports and permit details at the sector briefing. Minors under 15 years are turned away at the gate, even if a permit was previously issued.
Standard Gorilla Trekking Day Schedule ⏰
07:00 AM – Ranger Briefing & Registration: Gather at the sector headquarters (e.g., Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija, or Mgahinga) for group assignments, safety guidelines, and tracker allocations.
08:00 AM – Rainforest Trek Begins: Set off into the jungle alongside armed UWA rangers and experienced trackers following trail signs and fresh nests.
1-Hour Primate Encounter: Once the family is located, spend a controlled 60 minutes observing feeding, grooming, and juvenile play from a safe 7-metre distance.
Afternoon – Transfer & Rest: Return to the briefing point for graduation certificates, followed by a transfer to your overnight lodge or Lake Bunyonyi for afternoon rest.
Strategic Lodge Placement Along the Route 🏨
🌿 Gorilla Havens Lodge: Positioned in the northern/western corridors, providing a smooth overnight transition when travelling from Queen Elizabeth National Park toward Bwindi.
🏡 Gorilla Mist Lodge / Rushaga Gorilla Lodge: Located directly adjacent to Bwindi trekking sectors, eliminating long morning drives before your 7:00 AM briefing.
🏝️ Itambira Island Resort (Lake Bunyonyi): A post-trek sanctuary on the water, ideal for relaxing after the forest walk before heading to Kigali or Entebbe.
